Big, Boxy Suits Ruled 2019, but Kate Beckinsale Mastered the Look Back in 2001

Kim Kardashian may have raised eyebrows (and set a new precedent in power dressing) when she put on a boxy suit to see Jenna Bush Hager, but she's not the oversized suit trendsetter that she might think she is. Even though her oversized blue suit looked fresh and cool, Kate Beckinsale wore a similarly relaxed zoot suit in 2001 when she was promoting her film Serendipity.

For the New York City premiere of the rom-com, which also starred John Cusack and featured a very, very memorable elevator scene, Beckinsale skipped out on the mermaid gowns and LBDs that ruled the early aughts and decided to wear an all-white zoot suit, complete with a matching white tie and round-toe white heels. The look may have raised eyebrows back then, but the look set the standard for today's suited-up sets.

Kardashian wore a similarly cut suit when she appeared with Bush Hager on the Today show to discuss Rodney Reed. While some viewers criticized the host for bringing Kardashian in to talk about prison reform and politics, Bush Hager took the high road and quoted her grandmother, Barbara Bush (sort of).

Another fan of the silhouette? Alexa Demie, who wore a checked version for her appearance on InStyle's Small Talk. Hers was by Alexander Wang and included a leather vest, adding an injection of cool-girl edge. With Kardashian and Demie leading the pack, it's only a matter of time before we start seeing zoot suits make their return to the red carpet.
