Known for his vibrantly colored caftans and robes, and his larger-than-life personality to match, legendary stylist André Leon Talley’s legacy lives on.

After time at Interview Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily and The New York Times, Talley is best known for being the first black editor-at-large and creative director of VOGUE. You might recall seeing Talley’s eccentric, regal presence as a judge on America’s Next Top Model or Miss Universe, or in movies like The September Issue and his own documentary The World According to André. (BRB as we cue that up to stream again on Hulu immediately after this.)

This month, one year after Talley passed away from a heart attack and COVID-19, you’ll have the chance to help some of the iconic fashion pro’s world live on in your own thanks to an upcoming auction at Christie’s.

The Collection of André Leon Talley will be sold through a live sale on February 15 and two online sales ending on February 16 and 17 by Christie’s New York and in partnership with Talley’s estate. Including haute couture, handbags, jewelry, home decor, and beyond, his most prized collectibles celebrate the last 50 years of fashion (couture and caftans galore) and fine art (including works by Andy Warhol and Karl Lagerfeld).

According to Christie’s, the collection gives nods to Talley’s love for his grandmother and his admiration for VOGUE editors Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour.

“André Leon Talley's fashion sensibility was singular and timeless,” Elizabeth Seigel, Christie’s head of private and iconic collections says. “We are beyond thrilled to steward this group of objects from his homes, a selection that showcases Talley's endless love for all things beautiful. From monogrammed Louis Vuitton trunks, to custom Tom Ford caftans, each lot is imbued with meaning and linked to his larger-than-life persona and legacy, which continue to inspire us all.”

All purchases support a couple causes close to Talley’s soul: Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City and the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Georgetown, South Carolina. In addition, Christie’s says it will honor Talley’s legacy by amplifying diverse voices and expanding their network of contributors, vendors and tastemakers. Case in point: The catalog will feature Talley’s mentee, Queens, New York-based designer, LaQuan Smith.

Not quite ready to bid? A selection of Talley’s prized items are jetting off on a tour prior to the auction, and will be on display in Palm Beach from January 18 through 31 and in Paris from January 23 through 26.
