Beyond the frame: Free programs at the National Portrait Gallery

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The portraits at the National Portrait Gallery have quite a story to tell, and you and your family can experience the portraits beyond the frame.

“At the portrait gallery, we’re helping people sort of think about their own stories as they look at portraits of people who have gone before us or portraits of contemporary people in the U.S.  and thinking about how we see ourselves and how we see others,” said Beth Evans, Youth and Programs Manager at National Portrait Gallery.

When you walk in, there are actually two museums in the building: the Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Evans says they’re both great places to visit with your family.

“We have activities that involve art, we have activities that involve stories and storytelling,” she said. “We actually have actives for all ages, not just families, and they are all free.”

One of the activities is Portrait Gallery Kids, which Evans says happens every Monday. Each week she says they explore different portraits, different art materials and stories.

There is also a program starting in June called Big Ideas Book Club. Evans says they read a book and discuss the ideas from the book, then create art based on the stories they talk about.
