Beyoncé Turns Her Paris Concert Into a Real Couture Runway

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s larger than life collection gets the Beyoncé treatment.

The Beyoncé-fication of high fashion continues! Music’s queen has already used the past month to preview the Gucci x Dapper Dan collaboration, release a capsule collection with Balmain, and take over the Louvre in full runway looks, but for the Paris leg of the On the Run II tour, she took her love of clothing even further. The artist finished her set at Saint-Denis’s Stade de France in the breathtaking closing look from Valentino’s recent Fall 2018 couture show.

With its voluminous taffeta ruffles, lengthy train, and zesty tangerine color, the gown felt worlds away from the barely there outfits Beyoncé has favored throughout the tour, but the change in style proved meaningful. Studded short shorts and sequined fringe might be ideal for performing dance tracks, but when it came time for ballads like “Resentment,” the dreamy feel of Pierpaolo Piccioli’s design provided the perfect complement to Beyoncé’s powerful vocals.

Though she skipped the floral headdress worn by model Adut Akech on the runway, the drama of the gown carried over into Beyoncé’s interpretation of the look. Diamond cuffs and newly dyed waves added glitz to the equation, and Beyoncé’s vibe was regal even as she performed into the wee hours.
