Beyoncé Ties with Jay-Z as the Most Grammy-Nominated Artist in History

Beyoncé's Renaissance era has earned her yet another spot in Grammy history.

The Recording Academy announced today that the superstar has scooped up eight nominations for the 65th annual Grammy Awards, rounding out her overall count of total Grammy nominations to 88. With these new nods under her belt, Beyoncé is now the most-nominated artist ever, tying with her husband, Jay-Z, who also holds 88 nominations. She is also now the first female artist to reach 80 nominations.

This year, she garnered nominations in the categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year for "Break My Soul," Song of the Year for "Break My Soul," Best Dance/Electronic Music Album, Best Dance/Electronic Recording for "Break My Soul, Best R&B Performance for "Virgo's Groove," Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Plastic Off the Sofa," and Best Song Written for Visual Media for "Be Alive" from King Richard.

In 2020, she became the most-nominated female artist and the artist with the second most Grammy nominations, tying with Paul McCartney at 79 nominations. At the time, only Jay-Z and producer Quincy Jones topped her Grammy nomination count, with 80 nominations each, according to the official Grammy website.

Today's nominations also sets her up to become the artist with the most Grammy wins. Currently, prolific conductor Georg Solti holds the title, with 31 awards under his belt. Thus far, Beyoncé has won 28 golden gramophones, making her the most-awarded female artist.

Beyoncé released Renaissance, her seventh studio album, this past July. Long before she officially announced the project, the mogul hinted at the album's theme in an interview for Harper's BAZAAR's September 2021 cover story.

"With all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again. I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible," she said at the time. "I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare. One chorus can have up to 200 stacked harmonies. Still, there’s nothing like the amount of love, passion, and healing that I feel in the recording studio. After 31 years, it feels just as exciting as it did when I was nine years old. Yes, the music is coming!"
