Beyoncé Stayed Seated During Joaquin Phoenix's Standing Ovation
Beyoncé was seen sitting at the Golden Globes while the audience gave Joaquin Phoenix a standing ovation for his Best Actor win.
It's unclear why the singer was seated, but some Twitter fans interpreted it as a form of protest.
Beyoncé was also nominated for Best Original Song at this year's ceremony.
You might have missed Beyoncé at the Golden Globes last night if you weren't looking hard enough. The superstar skipped the red carpet arrivals and was later seen standing in the back of the venue with husband Jay-Z before they took their seats mid-ceremony. Viewers were lucky enough to get flashes of her reactions here and there during the broadcast, but for the most part, she tried to stay under the radar. That was until Joaquin Phoenix won.
When the actor claimed his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his role in Joker, the crowd responded with a standing ovation; but Beyoncé was spotted sitting down. It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, and the reason for her sitting was unclear, but it was enough to get Twitter talking.
Joaquin Phoenix winning for Joker and receiving a standing ovation from everyone... except Beyonce. Love. pic.twitter.com/F4ggYMt7hS

Some praised her for presumably protesting his win, others scolded her for disrespecting the actor, and some explained that the singer was presumably sitting because her custom Schiaparelli couture gown, which had massive shoulder details, would have blocked the view. The reactions were mixd to say the least.
Beyoncé sitting during the standing ovation for Joaquin Phoenix's win is the type of energy I want to see from everyone in 2020 pic.twitter.com/EJD8uq4mHq

Joaquin Phoenix just did a speech about global warming and how celebrities should start doing changes themselves personally instead of putting the responsibility in other people and then clean their hands. But somehow Beyonce not giving him a standing ovation is more important... pic.twitter.com/GyjH9mBDQa

Apparently there was some hoop-la over Beyoncé not standing during the ovation for Joaquin Phoenix at the #GoldenGlobes...did you see my queen’s dress?!? She would’ve stolen the moment! Be grateful of her.

Just putting it out there. MAYBE Beyoncé didn’t stand during Joaquin Phoenix’s standing ovation because her dress was massive & would have been a pain to get out of her chair with and then gather it to sit down again.
Just a thought. Maybe it wasn’t a statement. #GoldenGlobes— Nicki Price (@nickiprice27) January 6, 2020
Beyoncé herself was nominated for a Golden Globe last night for the Best Original Song for the power ballad "Spirit," which she wrote for 2019's The Lion King. However, Elton John, who composed a new track for his biopic Rocketman, ultimately took home the prize.
