Beyoncé brought in a pop superstar and literal country music royalty, Miley Cyrus, as one of her collaborators for Cowboy Carter. The two stars duet on the 16th track of the album, “II MOST WANTED,which sees them harmonizing and trading lines. The title is a subtle nod to their status as two of the music industry’s biggest artists. The lyrics, on the other hand, are an ode to the romantic partnerships that have anchored them.

Cyrus is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and the goddaughter of Dolly Parton, who also appears on Beyoncé’s album. Like Beyoncé, Cyrus has been linked to country but has predominately been considered as an artist in different music genres (primarily pop).

Lyrically, Cyrus and Beyoncé’s track is a love song to their long-term partners. It addresses how meeting them profoundly changed their lives, along with their commitment to being there for them (“I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I die”). Both Beyoncé and Cyrus are in long-standing relationships with musicians.

Beyoncé, of course, has been dating Jay-Z since 2001; she met him one year before when she was 18. They got married in April 2008 and have three children together: 12-year-old Blue Ivy and 6-year-old twins Sir and Rumi.

The couple released an album together that explored their relationship, Everything Is Love, in June 2018. They have sung about their romance throughout their careers though, revealing more about their love through their music than in any interviews.

Cyrus, meanwhile, has been dating Maxx Morando since 2021. She told British Vogue that they were set up on a blind date: “Well, it was blind for me and not really for him,” Cyrus said. “I thought, ‘The worst that can happen is I leave.’”

Cyrus took Morando as her date to the 2024 Grammys, where they were photographed kissing. A source told People on February 7 that they had moved in together and were very happy. “Miley has changed a lot in the past couple of years,” they said. “She seems more calm and harmonious. Everyone loves Maxx. He’s a great guy. She is very happy with him. He’s private and doesn’t like being in the press. It’s been good for her.”

Verse 1: Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé
Know we’re jumpin’ the gun, but we’re both still young
One day, we won’t be
Didn’t know what I want ’til I saw your face
Said goodbye to the old me

Pre-Chorus

Came out of nowhere, didn’t give no warnin’
Pedal so heavy like the two most wanted
And I don’t know what you're doin' tonight
But I

Chorus

I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I die
Smoke out the window flyin’ down the 405
I’ll be your backseat baby, drivin’ you crazy
Anytime you like
Woah, I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I
’Til the day I die

Verse 2

Making waves in the wind with my empty hand
My other hand on you
Been a while since I haven’t tried to pull away
But it’s time for something new

Pre-Chorus

Came out of nowhere, didn’t give no warnin’
Pedal so heavy like the two most wanted
And I don’t know what you’re doin’ tonight
But I

Chorus

I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I die
Smoke out the window flyin’ down the 405
Yeah, I’ll be your backseat baby, drivin’ you crazy
Anytime you like
Woah, I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I
’Til the day I die

Post-Chorus

(’Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)
’Til the day I die
(’Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)

Bridge

I know we’re jumpin’ the gun and we’re both still young
But one day, we won’t be
I’d go wherever you take me, seems kind of crazy
Ooh, oh

Chorus

I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I die
We’re gettin’ high ’til we don't realize time is passin’ by
Yeah, I’ll be your backseat, baby, I’m drivin’ you crazy
Anytime you like, oh, woah
I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I
’Til the day I die

Post-Chorus

(’Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)
’Til the day I die
(’Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)
Mm, oh
