  • In an interview with co-star Josh O'Connor, it was revealed that Beyonce inadvertently gave Zendaya a "goodbye gift" on the set of her new film, Challengers.

  • Zendaya was discussing O'Connor's singular passion for ceramics and how he can get so swept up in the hobby.

  • O'Connor then countered that Zendaya similarly spent an entire day on set obsessed with Beyonce's "Break My Soul."

As the U.S. Open kicks off, cinema fans are considering the April release of Luca Guadagnino's latest film, the sensually charged tennis drama Challengers. The newest work from the Italian auteur behind Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All, the film was initially set to come out in mid-September before being pushed back due to the current SAG-AFTRA strike. Naturally, the buzz is around director Guadagnino and the film's leads, Mike Faist (West Side Story) and Josh O'Connor (The Crown). But Challengers also features a lesser-known performer with much promise, Zendaya.

We're kidding, obviously. The movie star has two Emmys under her belt, stars in massive franchises like Spider-Man and Dune, and is poised to generate awards buzz for her role as Tashi Duncan in the aforementioned Challengers. If any star of her generation can be described as "the moment," it's her.

So, is there anyone out there so massively, undeniably iconic that their work can leave even Zendaya speechless? As it turns out, there is, and it's a fellow single-named singer and actress who has conquered pop culture.

V Magazine brought Zendaya in to interview her Challengers co-star Josh O'Connor for a feature on the Emmy-winning actor. The conversation turned to the actor's apparent passion for ceramics. "I feel like I can go off in my own head at times and be a little distant," O'Connor said. "But if anyone strikes up a conversation with me about ceramics, they’ll first be like, 'Oh my god, Josh is lit up about something.'"

In an attempt to illustrate his suggestion that "everyone has a thing that makes them tick," he relayed an anecdote about his interviewer, Zendaya, from when the two were on the set of their film.

"There was a day when we were shooting, and Beyonce’s new track was coming out–and I’m not saying that Beyonce is like your equivalent of my ceramics, but no one could talk to Z. Like we didn’t engage that entire day, you were just listening to that song every second," O'Connor said.

The song, later confirmed to be the Renaissance single "Break My Soul," was more significant for Zendaya that day than just being a new banger from Beyonce (though make no mistake, that track is absolutely a banger).

"You know what it was?" Zendaya said in explanation, "It was our last day in Boston. And I was like, 'What are the odds?' She gave us a good song to give us our farewell."
