Beyoncé's Adidas x Ivy Park Collection Doesn't Include Plus Sizes — and People Aren't Happy About It

Beyoncé's been busy teasing her latest fashion project this week. Celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Hailey Bieber, and Janell Monae all debuted huge orange crates filled with Adidas x Ivy Park, the singer's brand-new collection of athleisure. While the high-profile fans are no surprise, Beyoncé fans were surprised to find that the new collection wouldn't be completely size-inclusive. Early reports stated that the collection would be available in sizes XS-XL and critics cited Beyoncé's past inclusion as a point of contention.

"I love Beyoncé. I am a noted member of the Beyhive. It is also incredibly disappointing that a woman who has made inclusion a part of her brand willfully excluded plus-size shoppers from her athleisure line. And this isn't the first time," Twitter user freeblackgirl shared.

Before Beyoncé released Ivy Park with Adidas, the line was a collaboration with Topshop. Back in 2016, when the collection hit stores, it was also only available in sizes XS-XL, according to Bustle.

"It's an odd oversight considering that Beyoncé's stage shows have almost always included fat people. Beychella featured dancers in an array of sizes. The Mamas have long been Bey's backup singers (though I'm unsure if they still are). It is odd and disappointing," freeblackgirl added.

Beyoncé herself stated that she made the collection for everyone. She told Elle, "I focused on designing a unisex collection of footwear and apparel because I saw so many men in Ivy Park. The way they have embraced the brand is an unexpected gift. I appreciate the beauty of gender-neutral clothing and breaking the so-called fashion rules."

Even Adidas mentioned inclusivity in the collection announcement.

"This unique relationship champions the values of inclusivity, community and diversity and will take consumers on an unconventional journey starting with this capsule collection for Spring '20," a press release from the sportswear giant reads.

There has been precedent for plus-size collections from Adidas. Back in late 2019, Adidas partnered with Universal Standard for a collection that went up to size 4X. At the time, Alison Stewart, vice president of concept development at Adidas, told Teen Vogue, "Inclusive sizing is an important part of Adidas' commitment to enable more women to participate in sport by creating a more diverse range of products for them. This is the first step in the journey, with much more to come."

For now, not every member of the Beyhive will be able to enjoy the Adidas collaboration, but with vocal critics coming forward, that can still change. All Beyoncé needs to do is listen to her fans.
