Bette Midler, Sarah Paulson, Issa Rae, and Kaitlyn Dever to Star in New HBO Special, Coastal Elites
It was only a matter of time before the coronavirus quarantine became fodder for TV. HBO is slated to premiere a new special, entitled Coastal Elites, about politics and the pandemic this fall. Keep reading for everything we know so far about the star-studded special.
Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Sarah Paulson, and Issa Rae will star in the special.
There's no doubt that this program has an impressive cast. Midler, Dever, Levy, Paulson, and Rae will play the five main characters, all navigating life through the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing. The special features confessional-style interviews with each of the main characters as they cope with the new normal.
The behind-the-scenes team is filled with old pros, too.
Paul Rudnick, best known for writing Addams Family Values and In & Out, penned the special's script. Emmy-winning director Jay Roach, of Bombshell, All the Way, and the Austin Powers films, is at the project's helm.
Rudnick and Roach executive produced the with Tony winner Jeffrey Seller of Hamilton and In the Heights fame, alongside Flody Suarez (Rise, 8 Simple Rules), Scott Chaloff, and Michelle Graham (Bombshell).
The show is set during the summer of 2020.
Midler, Dever, Levy, Paulson, and Rae play characters living across the U.S., from New York to Los Angeles, coping with the pandemic and the polarizing politics surrounding the current moment.
According to HBO, the special “tells stories of breaking down and breaking through in the summer of 2020 that are funny, searing, poignant and now.”
The special will use humor and satire to tell this story and explore human connection during global isolation.
“Paul Rudnick and Jay Roach bring their razor-sharp perspective and wit to HBO,” Casey Bloys, President of HBO Programming told Deadline. “We are thrilled to partner with them in telling this story, which is uniquely resonant for these times.”
Coastal Elites will premiere in September 2020.
