We Bet You Never Noticed This “Pretty Woman” Reference in “Princess Diaries 2”

There are some movies that can be watched over and over again, no matter how many times you've seen them. And sometimes, despite being able to quote your favorite lines by heart, you might notice something you've never seen before. TikTok user Karly Maas knows exactly what we mean, as she noticed a cute Easter egg in a scene of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

"So I'm watching Princess Diaries 2: Royan Engagement, a great flick, and this scene happened," she narrates as the film shows Princess Mia waving to her court and forgetting she has car keys in her hand; the keys go flying and are caught mid-air by one of her staff. "It's always been a very funny scene. I thought it was very funny. But then, something hit. This man is very important," Karly says, referring to the white-haired staff member standing near Mia. "That line, 'It happens all the time,' is very important."

"If you've seen another classic movie, Pretty Woman, you would remember this scene," Karly continues. She then transitions to the restaurant scene of the 1990 film starring Julia Roberts, where her character Vivian Ward tries to crack a snail at dinner and it ends up flying through the air, only to be caught by the same man! Mind = blown.

Other TikTok users were quick to jump in with other similarities between the two films. "And she's in a red dress with white gloves!!" commented one, shouting out one of Vivian's most iconic looks in Pretty Woman. "Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries are basically the same movie," commented another. "I love both these movies and never caught this!! Good job!" wrote another.

Freeform even joined the conversation on Twitter, writing, "'It happens all the time.' Same energy as Princess Diaries 2. Oh wait... 'cause it's THE SAME GUY, AYY. Slippery little suckers." Another Twitter user thought it was amusing that actor Allan Kent, who plays the man in question, looks exactly the same in both films, despite the 14-year gap between the release dates. "Pretty Woman came out in 1990 & Princess Diaries 2 came out in 2004 yet he still looks the same," they wrote. "What's his secret?!"

This isn't exactly new news, however. Garry Marshall directed both Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries 2, and he's known for using many of the same actors in his projects. (Héctor Elizondo, who plays Joe in the Princess Diaries movies, is a great example; he also appears in Pretty Woman as the hotel concierge Barney.) It's also worth noting that Allan Kent shows up in the first Princess Diaries movie too, and utters the same line yet again. Time is a flat circle indeed. We think it's time for a Garry Marshall film festival, and we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for more hidden gems like this.
