Bestselling Novel 'Red, White & Royal Blue' Getting Movie Adaptation It Deserves

The son of the president of the United States in a secret love affair with the prince of England? How deliciously scandalous! And if you're thinking to yourself, "I would read the crap out of that story," well then you happen to be on the same page as much of the world, because that is in fact the plot of Casey McQuiston's bestselling novel Red, White & Royal Blue.

McQuiston's debut novel and LGBTQ+ rom-com was released in 2019 and immediately became an instant sensation, launching a wave of LGBTQ+ romance novels and McQuiston's career. Before the book had even hit shelves Amazon Studios had won an auction for the film rights, and the studio immediately began work on creating a steamy film adaptation. The adaptation has now completed shooting and is slated to come out during summer of 2023. Here's everything we know about the film Red, White & Royal Blue. 

When will Red, White & Royal Blue be released?

Amazon Studios announced that the movie will be released on Friday, August 11, 2023. The studio released the date as well as teaser art on April 26. The photo reveals two men sitting with their legs crossed over one another. One is wearing socks bearing the Stars and Stripes while the other dons socks bearing the Union Jack. Things are off to a sexy start and we haven't even seen a full body yet!

So who will be playing our lovers from across the pond? It was announced in 2022 that the role of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the first female U.S. President will be played by Taylor Zakhar Perez, while Nicholas Galitzine will be playing the British Prince Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor. Perez is best known for his work on The Kissing Booth 2 and The Kissing Booth 3 as well as the HBO series Minx, while Galitzine starred in the 2021 adaptation of Cinderella and the Netflix romance Purple Hearts.

Uma Thurman will be playing Alex's mom President Ellen Claremont, while Clifton Collins Jr. and Stephen Fry also join the cast in currently unannounced roles.

Who is the director of Red, White & Royal Blue?

The movie was directed by Matthew Lopez, who also wrote the script along with Casey McQuiston and Ted Malawer. This will be Lopez's directorial debut on film, but he's a big name in the Broadway world. He wrote The Inheritance, a show that won Best Play at the Tonys along with countless other awards, and his adaptation of Some Like it Hot is currently running on Broadway.
