If you want a deodorant that will benefit your 'pits with minimal environmental impact, you should know not all deodorants are eco-friendly.

While zero-waste is an admirable goal (and buzzy industry term), there are some pitfalls — mainly, that even "zero-waste" products can still create waste in the ingredient sourcing and production stages. "A circular system means that products and packaging are designed to either return to nature (such as composting) or return to the industrial system, (such as packaging that is recycled or, even better, refilled)," says Mia Davis, the director of environmental and social responsibility for Credo Beauty.
When it comes to deodorant, you won't find an option that is entirely zero-waste in that it arrives free of packaging. But you can choose a product in a refillable package or a package that can be recycled or composted (e.g. paper not coated with resins that won't break down). How ingredients are grown, harvested, mined, or manufactured is also a part of a product's overall footprint, and therefore a part of the sustainability conversation, adds Davis. You'll notice that some of the zero-waste deodorants on this list are natural deodorants, and others are antiperspirants. As the name suggests, antiperspirants actually block the production of sweat, with an aluminum compound that plugs the sweat ducts. Natural deodorants, on the other hand, don't contain aluminum, and while they can reduce odor and absorb some sweat, they don't prevent you from sweating entirely.
What's the difference between natural and clean beauty products? Well, without an entity policing their use, their definitions are a bit murky. Generally, however, natural products use ingredients only found in nature whereas clean can be made of natural or synthetic, aka lab-derived, but all of which are safe for the planet and you or have no evidence to suggest they're not safe. It's not a coincidence that the clean/natural and eco-friendly categories tend to overlap. If you like to stick with an antiperspirant for its sweat-blocking benefits, you can try Secret's refillable option. If you purchase a tube, you can easily forgo plastic from that point on, since the brand's refills come in 100 percent paperboard packaging.
Before launching its refillable antiperspirant, Secret rolled out a deodorant that comes in plastic-free packaging made from 85-percent post-consumer recycled paper. The aluminum-free formulas incorporate essential oils and come in scents such as orange and cedar and rose and geranium.

Baking soda is a popular ingredient in natural deodorants as it kills odor-causing bacteria and absorbs sweat, but some people are sensitive to it. Sound familiar?
