No shame, but these are the 5 best washable rug brands if you tend to be messy

When I moved into my new apartment this summer, I knew I needed to update my living room rug. Not to gross you out, but my rug withstood a lot, from potty training a puppy to plenty of red wine spills. Based on my clumsiness alone, I decided I needed to upgrade to a washable rug.

Washable rugs aren’t new, but the rug category has definitely risen in popularity thanks to social media. People with pets or kids or those who are just simply messy like me have shared how great their washable finds are. However, not all washable rugs are the same.

There are basically two types: one-piece rugs and two-piece rugs. One-piece rugs are pretty much your standard rug. If you need to clean it, you can toss it in the washing machine just the way it is. Two-piece rugs come with a rug cover and a rug pad, and only the rug cover is washable.

There are pros and cons to both options. For one-piece rugs, it’s nice that it looks and feels like a standard rug. You also don’t have to line it up with a rug pad after you wash it. However, you have to have a washing machine big enough to fit a full rug inside. If you don’t, you may have to get it professionally washed at a laundromat. For two-piece rugs, the rug cover is usually pretty thin, so you can fit it into most washing machines, no matter the size. However, it can be difficult to center the cover perfectly on the mat and keep it from flipping up.

I personally have both types of washable rugs in my home, and I’m a big fan. If you want to try one in your home, take a look below at five of the best washable rug brands based on color and pattern options, softness and affordability.

1. Revival

Revival’s cofounders believe a good rug can transform a room — but it shouldn’t cost a whole month’s rent. The brand sought to make quality rugs more affordable by cutting out the middleman and selling its products directly from the producers. While the online retailer sells gorgeous vintage and custom rugs, it also sells incredible washable ones. It offers neutral, colorful, shag and flatweave washable options — and they all feel uber luxurious.

Its washable rugs come in one piece, meaning it looks and feels like your standard rug. But if needed, you can put the whole thing in your washing machine and give it a good clean. I personally have the Stripe washable rug in my living room, and it’s super soft and plush. I also like that it was shipped in a box, which made it easier to carry up to my apartment and unfold in my room. It also didn’t come with a funky new rug smell like some others do.

2. Rugs USA

If you want a rug fast, Rugs USA offers free three-day shipping. And speaking from personal experience, no matter the size, your rug may even show up overnight. The brand is stocked with thousands of regular rug options. However, it also has a pretty stacked washable rug selection. In fact, it currently has over 750 options on its website.

Rugs USA’s washable rugs are one-piece wonders you can toss in the washing machine if or when needed. Sort by size, color, thickness, style and more to find the best one for your space. Just a heads up, though — the brand also has sales often, so more likely than not, you can nab one for less.

3. Ruggable

Ruggable is one of the first brands to sell only washable rug options. It launched in 2010 in the U.S. with 100% washable, water-resistant and stain-resistant rug covers. Yes, Ruggable’s rugs are the two-piece kind — you choose a rug cover and a rug pad to stick it to.

What’s nice about the two-piece system, in addition to how easy it is to wash, is that if you feel like switching your rug, you can easily use the same rug pad (as long as they’re the same size). Ruggable also stands out for its many collaborations with other brands and designers, including Barbie, Disney, Johnathan Adler, Gray Malin, Keith Haring and more.

I have a Ruggable rug at my doorway, and I like how easy it is to wash — especially because I wash it a lot. The only problem is that, sometimes, it’s hard to line it up on the rug pad perfectly so it doesn’t have any bubbles, and it takes a few tries. But once you have it set right, it’s worth it.

4. Rugs Direct

Rugs Direct has a wide range of one-piece washable rug styles, and they’re all relatively affordable. You can sort by style, from vintage and bohemian to Moroccan and modern, and other qualities like size and color. Additionally, most rugs are in stock, ready to ship and ship for free!

Pro tip: This retailer has sales often, so if you’re patient, you can probably get a great deal.

5. West Elm

West Elm’s washable rug selection isn’t as large as the other brands listed here, but its options are incredibly stylish. Some are neutral, others are bold with bright patterns, and one is even reversible. It’s important to note, too, that they have a lot of shaggy options, which usually aren’t available in the washable category. So, if you like a super thick, plush and shaggy rug, you’ll definitely want to check out West Elm.
