The Best Twitter Reactions to the Gloriously Chaotic 2021 Golden Globes
Awards shows are going to look a lot different this year. And Twitter has a lot to say about it.
First up on the roster of Hollywood's most sacred (and controversial) ceremonies are the 78th annual Golden Globes. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, comedic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler teamed up to host the production's first-ever bicoastal and semi-virtual event, with Fey taking the stage at the Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center in New York City and Poehler at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association also took some heat during the three-hour telecast for not having any Black members in at least 20 years, according to a recent Los Angeles Times investigation. The statistic comes as the HFPA, the body responsible for choosing Golden Globe nominees and winners, is under fire for overlooking a year of compelling art made by Black artists, writers, and filmmakers, like Michaela Coel's highly acclaimed I May Destroy You and Issa Rae's Insecure.
"Tonight, while we celebrate work of artists from around the globe, we recognize we have our own work to do. Just like in film and television, Black representation is vital. We must have Black journalists in our organization," said Helen Hoehne, HFPA vice president, during tonight's ceremony.
"We must also be sure everyone from all underrepresented communities gets a seat at our table," former HFPA president Meher Tatna added.
Below, Twitter sounds off on that and the rest of the night's biggest highlights.
