The Best Tricks to Clean Your Makeup Brushes After Halloween

From spooky to sparkling clean in a matter of minutes!

Halloween is here, which basically means that every artist, guru and James Charles stan is currently in the midst of crafting a killer (pun intended) makeup look for the evening. Whether you're looking for a simple glittery green glam or going full out with a full on costume makeover, the possibilities are truly endless. But when the night comes to the end, you've inevitably left with not only a full face of glam to take off, but also a ton of brushes to clean. While Halloween makeup may look stunning, the cleanup is far from amusing. Thankfully, Dominique Lerma, executive artist of MODA Brush, is here to help.

"Non-clean brushes can compromise your application, the longevity of your brushes and your overall skin health," she says. "Bacteria build up can occur that is harmful to your skin and can and will contaminate your makeup from the cross contamination. The bacteria from the brush will then be transferred to your skin and cause skin imperfections, breakouts and clogged pores. Overtime the makeup product builds up at the shaft of the brush."

Additionally, not cleaning your brushes "can cut its lifespan, which results in you spending more on your tools overtime," Lerma explains. So how exactly can you best clean your brushes from your Halloween nightmare? Lerma suggests using the Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap, mild hair shampoo, or gentle baby shampoo.

"Using the Moda Brush Heart Scrubby, I take a dollop of soap and in a figure eight motion gently clean the brushes into a healthy lather," Lerma explains. "Rinse thoroughly and while holding the middle of the brush, use your fingertips to press into the tips of the brush to shake off the access water and reshape back into its original form before laying flat to dry on a towel."

Lerma also shared another hack for brush cleaning, saying, "I deep clean my brushes in the evening and allow them to dry overnight and they will be dry for your first thing in the morning. Please note: Synthetic brushes do take longer to dry than a natural haired brush. Placing them to dry near a fan can aide in a faster drying time."

With these tips in mind, you'll be able to cleanse yourself and your brushes of that gorgeous nightmare makeup look you're concocting! Don't just end the cleaning process there, though. Lerma recommends "cleaning and sanitizing your brushes once every week or every 2 weeks."

Whether you're a sexy mouse or evil ex-wife (a Mean Girls reference, ok?), make sure you head to bed with your skin moisturized and your makeup brushes clean this Hallow's eve.
