CHICAGO — Is it too late to move your plants if they are already blooming?

WGN’s Plant Daddy Tim Joyce is back to answer more of your gardening questions.

A viewer from Chicago’s Northwest Side asked if it is too late to move her azaleas to a new location. She read that the ideal time to do so is early Spring or Fall.

Can you move azaleas that are already blooming?

Tim says azaleas have shallow roots, making them easy to dig up. They also recover quickly from the stress of moving.

He says even mature azaleas can be moved if damage to the root system is minimized.

Now the bad news — transplanting azaleas, or any plant that is in bloom can be very stressful for it. But if you want to move it for this season, you can pick other environmental conditions that will make that move a little less stressful for the azaleas.

When is the best time to transplant them?

The best time to move any shrub is in the early morning or late afternoon in the early Spring or Fall. You want to avoid transplanting any shrub including azaleas during extending dry periods or when daytime temperatures are above 80 degrees.

Ideally for azaleas, it would be earlier in the Spring before it fully leaves out.

Be kind to their root balls, keeping it as intact as possible, and make sure the new spot isn’t too sunny.
