The Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comic Is Getting a Sequel

Before it was a smash hit animated TV series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a comic book, and it was a pretty good one. IDW Publishing has taken up the mantle in recent years, and has been pushing the Turtles into some incredible places. Now, one of the series’ best comics is getting a sequel.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Last Ronin was a five-part miniseries that followed the last surviving Ninja Turtle – unnamed for most of the series – on a journey to avenge his fallen brothers. It was followed up with another five-part miniseries called Lost Years, which showed us a glimpse at the past, and also a small glimpse at the future, revealing four new Turtles in training.

Now The Last Ronin is getting a full-blown sequel focused on those four new mutants, Yi, Uno, Odyn, and Moja, who are said to be taking up the mantle and taking to the streets of New York and taking on the ultimate enemy. The series is being written by Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, with Ben Bishop, Esau Escorza, and Isaac Escorza providing the artwork.

It’s not known if The Last Ronin 2: Evolution will be a miniseries like its predecessors, or a longer run, but in an interview with IGN, Waltz suggested that the new Turtles could be sticking around for a while.

“I couldn’t be more excited and humbled to help bring the next generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the world,” Waltz said, “Awesome new stories and characters that stand firmly and respectfully atop the shoulders of the beloved legacy of their original namesakes.”

Eastman, in a separate interview, said the team wanted to stay in the universe “for a bit longer”, and set up the ending of Lost Years specifically so they could hopefully continue it in the future. And in the future it will be, as you’ll have to wait a little bit for the release date. The first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II - Re-Evolution will be released in-store on December 13, 2023.
