Sure, low-calorie beer is great for your waistline, but many brews tend to taste like they've been watered down-and who wants to sip on that? Thankfully, there are ways to choose a health-conscious brew without sacrificing the flavor you love. As a general rule, the higher the ABV, the higher the calorie count (most beers don't disclose their calories), so the type of beer style doesn't matter as much as the percent alcohol by volume.

"If you're looking for lower-calorie beer, look for ones that are between 4 and 5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV)," Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, nutrition and wellness expert, beer lover, and author of Eating in Color. Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, LDN, CPT, author of The 2-Day Diabetes Diet, recommends sticking with light beer no less than 4 percent ABV because anything lower tends to taste too watered down. "You can generally find a few good tasting beers around 95 to 120 calories per 12-ounce serving at this ABV level," she says.

But be sure to keep serving size in mind, too. Just because a beer is low calorie, it doesn't mean you can get away with chugging a six-pack. "If you will be drinking draft beer, remember that the average size is around 20 ounces. Choosing a bottle over a draft can be helpful in sticking to a true portion size, so you know how many calories you are really getting." Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends women stick to no more than one alcoholic drink per day and men up to two.
