These Are This Year’s Best Super Bowl Commercials

This year, all the biggest brands in the world get in on the fun, almost all well before kickoff of Super Bowl 2019.

It’s the Super Bowl, sure, but it’s also the Super Bowl of TV advertisements, with companies shelling out millions to place their spots during one of the most watched television events of the year. 2019’s best offerings began getting airplay (er, YouTube play?) well before kickoff.

Budweiser swapped out its beloved golden retriever puppies for a grown-up Dalmatian—and Bob Dylan; Amazon’s Alexa also employs a dog (and an adorably cranky Harrison Ford); Pepsi got Steve Carell, Cardi B, and Lil Jon; Alex Rodriguez and Charlie Sheen turned up for Mr. Peanut; Doritos instigated a Chance the Rapper and Backstreet Boys duet(!); Expensify got Adam Scott to reprise his role as a Parks and Rec–style accountant helping 2 Chainz with his expenses (and a nearly four-minute-long music video); Sarah Michelle Gellar dove into her slasher film history for Olay; Bumble got Serena Williams; Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeff Bridges reprised their most famous roles for Stella Artois; and Kia decided that rather than pay for a celebrity endorsement for its cars, it would start a scholarship program to help young people in need get a foothold in higher education. “Rather than focusing on celebrity endorsements, we are honoring the unfamous, the hardworking people behind the scenes who give it their all on a daily basis. We call them the Great Unknowns,” Kia’s spot reads. Skittles opted out entirely, in favor of a sold-out live musical starring Michael C. Hall that explores, The New York Times reported, “the role of commercialism in America” and “why celebrities participate in marketing.” (The big musical number is called “Advertising Ruins Everything.”) Okay!
