While last Monday brought out the stars for the Met Gala’s red carpet, across the pond, the Cannes Film Festival was just getting underway. The event lasts until the 19th, but already has delivered some major fashion moments. Standout Cate Blanchett came ashore like a sea goddess in Iris van Herpen’s couture creation that echoed the work of Alexander McQueen, before switching gears and embracing frills in Givenchy Haute Couture’s rainbow-hemmed frock. Lupita Nyong’o won the crowd with her grandiose style—particularly a voluminous Prada in Disney-princess pink—while Diane Kruger took a similar tack and channeled Monegasque royal Grace Kelly in a sky blue Armani Privé dress. Many stars this year went more avant-garde with their eveningwear, most notably by trying short dresses (Kristen Stewart in Chanel), playful motifs (Thandie Newton in custom Vivienne Westwood painted with her Star Wars costars), and modern opulence (Naomi Campbell in custom Poiret).

Off the carpet, attendees went even more experimental: Marion Cotillard off-set polish (a strapless Chanel column) with chunky-soled Nicholas Kirkwood boots, and Kendall Jenner played the boyish nature of her metallic sweater dress against a pair of ladylike stilettos. Above, 10 looks that have defined the festival so far.
