Sleepovers are an adolescent rite of passage—which is why they're so widely represented in pop culture. Nearly every great teen film, especially from the 2000s, has a sleepover scene. Sometimes they're cheesy; other times, funny. In a few, they're even dramatic. But weren't the sleepovers you went to growing up all of those things?

Of course, in movies and TV these situations are heightened—sorry, Blair Waldorf, but most sleepovers don't involve breaking into your mom's designer showroom on a dare—but they do ring true in many ways. And of all the sleepover scenes shown pop culture, the ones we list below are easily the most iconic.

Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?

Gossip Girl (2007)

In the first season of Gossip Girl, Blair invites freshman Jenny to her infamous, exclusive sleepover, and several luxe shenanigans ensue. They down martinis (scandal), throw around overpriced designer clothes, and play a high-stakes game of Truth or Dare that leads to police intervention.

Sugar & Spice (2001)

This forgotten classic centers on a group of cheerleaders who rob a bank to help one of their teammates after she becomes pregnant. After they successfully snag the cash, they have a sleepover and literally throw the money around everywhere, music-video-style.

Sleepover (2004)

Two cliques of middle school girls compete in an all-night scavenger hunt in this truly ridiculous film starring Alexa Vega and Sara Paxton. The prize? A coveted high school lunch sitting spot because...that's what you cared about at 14.

Bring It On (2000)

The toothbrushing scene between Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) and Cliff (Jesse Bradford) is now early-aughts canon.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

As is this (albeit corny) scene with Jenna Rink and her preteen friends in 13 Going on 30.

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

The girls in John Tucker Must Die use an away-game hotel sleepover situation to epically prank the movie's titular douchebag. And it's glorious.

Crossroads (2002)

After a wild night in New Orleans, the maing characters, played by Britney Spears, Zoe Saldana, and Taryn Manning, hunker down in a five-star hotel for a bougie sleepover. What starts out as tipsy fun soon morphs into some truly poignant emotional dialogue between the three childhood friends.
