It’s obvious by now. SKIMS is a powerhouse in coolness, and SKIMS editorial campaigns have just about become a status symbol. It’s as if Kim Kardashian tapping you to wear a lacy teddy or a fitted black tank top is a public acknowledgement that you’re a real somebody.
Sabrina Carpenter’s SKIMS photo campaign just went live, and it’s one of the brand’s most creative editorial photoshoots yet. In it, Sabrina is sexed up in a late ’90s/early 2000s style bedroom, lounging, using a landline phone, and operating a clunky television remote. Until now, the campaigns have been pretty straightforward sets with seamlesses, occasional props, and minimal set dressing. Lana Del Rey’s Valentine’s Day shoot earlier this year amped up the creativity a bit with more set decoration.
The chatter surrounding these online rollouts seems to affirm the growing belief that these brands and their ads are the about to be the best place for ambitious art shoots. This is a conversation about capital because at this point everything is, but the fact remains that brands and advertisers are current best positioned to be able to do high art concepts like this, and the fact that SKIMS is now fashion’s Marvel movie, where being cast puts you in an exclusive class of icons, gives us something fun to talk about, to grapple with, to criticize, to engage with.
1. Sabrina Carpenter
Sabrina Carpenter’s editorial shoot with SKIMS marks a clear intention toward a magazine-style editorial. It’s evocative of the kind of thing PAPER Magazine would put out for their Break The Internet issues.
2. Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey’s campaign was a vintage pin-up calendar moment that somehow no one saw coming. It was truly a photo drop heard around the world.
3. SKIMS Lab
While not a photo campaign, SKIMS pulled out all the stops for its first television ad. Kim Kardashian once had to be convinced by all the supers to star in an ad campaign with them, and here she is leaning all the way in.
4. Kim Kardashian for SKIMS Holiday 2023
The vision is so clear on this campaign. The 2023 Holiday campaign featured Kim in a vintage après ski print catalogue. The photos were done by Nadia Lee Cohen.
5. SKIMS Swim
The swim campaign launched in February 2024 in preparation for spring. It seems heavily inspired by Malibu Barbie and beachside swim pageant competitions. The campaign was shot by a SKIMS fave, Charlie Denis.
6. SKIMS x Swarovski
The high glamour high flash vibe of the SKIMS x Swarovski campaign reminds me a lot of the vibe of American Apparel shoots with an Instagram glitter filter over it.
7. Nipple Bra
Where were you when the nipple bra dropped? Kim Kardashian’s nipple bra campaign was pretty stripped back, but the wet t-shirt of it all says everything there is to say.
8. Cotton Fleece
A simple, but elegant concept: beautiful women in their Friday night cozies (SKIMS, obviously) running to the bodega for snacks.
9. Carmen Elektra and Jenny McCarthy
The original bombshells Carmen Elektra and Jenny McCarthy stun in this vintage pinup shoot.
10. SKIMS Swim
This swim campaign with SKIMS really leans into that high saturation look of Southern California. The fake-looking grass and the plastic sheen on the skin really leans into the Barbie doll aesthetic of the campaign.
