What's better than enjoying a nice beach day during the brink of summer? After all, swimming in the ocean and splashing around in the deep blue waves, is one of the best ways to beat the heat. That is, however, if you aren't afraid of sharks! Sorry, we had to go there. Don't blame us... blame the many shark movies that have sparked an interest in the sea's gigantic creatures! It's no wonder there's an entire week dedicated to sharks! With Shark Week happening between July 11-18 this year, we decided to curate a list of the best shark movies of all time. And oh, does it go deep!
Now, we won't go as far as saying that the movies on this list are horror movies—but if you've seen any of the films in the Jaws franchise (we're looking at you, Ree Drummond!), then you might think otherwise. But don't worry, not every shark movie on this list is as gruesome. We have Disney movies, like Finding Nemo here, family-friendly movies like Shark Tale, and tons of beach movies, too. Scroll through (at your own risk), and begin your shark-infested streaming! They're perfect for Shark Week and beyond!
Jaws
Jaws is one of the most classic shark movies of all time. Winning three Academy Awards (including a nomination for Best Picture), the Steven Spielberg directed film is essentially responsible for heightening people's fears of sharks and the ocean! 😅
The Shallows
Blake Lively plays a medical student who wants nothing but to have a stress-free beach vacation. She experiences the exact opposite when she finds herself stuck on a rock in the middle of the ocean, with a lurking shark who awaits its next meal. Lively's character must figure out a way to get back to shore without being taken under.
Shark Tale
Oscar just wants to be welcomed in his community of fellow fish. After some failed attempts at making friends, he decides to lie and tell everyone that he defeated the son of one of the scariest sharks in the sea. When proof is requested, he befriends said son—where they devise a plan into tricking everyone into thinking Oscar's claims are true. How long can the lie go on for, though?
The Meg
If you're already afraid of sharks—then beware of the prehistoric shark, the Megalodon. Thought to be extinct, you could imagine the shock on Jonas Taylor's (Jason Statham) face when he finds himself fighting the creature while out at sea, trying to save himself and the rest of his crew.
In the Deep
If you were offered to dive into the ocean via a shark tank while on vacation, would you go? These two sisters do—because what could possibly go wrong? They get their answer pretty quickly when their cage ends up disconnecting from its base, having them drop to the ocean floor. The sharks they meet are hungry, and not so friendly.
The Reef
A group of best friends decide to take a trip to the Indonesia bayside. All goes well... until they become stranded, of course. Their swim back to shore is made even more difficult when a Great White shark decides to join them on their journey.
Sharknado
This is a doozy of a movie, because the title is exactly what it's about: a tornado of sharks. Citizens of Los Angeles have more to worry about than insane traffic: they need to learn how to fight off the sharks that now infest their roads, homes, and sky-rise buildings.
Finding Nemo
Did you think we forgot about Marlin and Dory, and their battle against some mischievous sharks while on their quest to save Marlin's son? Of course not! This classic deserves a spot on any shark list!
Dark Tide
Halle Berry plays the role of a former professional scuba diver, who is brought back to the oceanic scene due to a request from a millionaire who needs help with an ongoing project. Once in the water, she finds herself welcomed back by the same gruesome shark that kept her away in the first place. We watch as she must fight the same creature that ruined her life just a year before.
Deep Blue Sea
A group of scientists and researchers think that the cure to Alzheimers disease can be found in the DNA of a shark. So, they decide to take matters into their own hands, and capture one themselves, trapping it in their mobile research lab at sea. When the shark becomes loose, it decides to take revenge on each and every one of them—forcing them to literally fight to survive. Samuel L. Jackson stars in this one!
