There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Briogeo's Don't Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Hair Oil

Tester: Jennifer Hussein, beauty editor with too much hair to manage

The Brief: Having thick, long hair is all fun and games until it's not. Yes, I am happy and proud of the bountiful amount of hair that grows out of my head, but it's not all braids and chic high ponytails. My strands shed as fast as they grow (which is pretty fast), and they've gone through a fair share of abuse from heated tools and too-tight hair ties. I also have the wonderful combination of greasy roots and dry mid-to-ends, making the hunt for the right hair products that much harder.

So, I decided to search for the impossible: a product that makes styling my hair a minimal-effort ordeal, without sacrificing my hair’s healthy appearance. Because don't we all want fabulous hair without having to endlessly fuss over it?

That's when Briogeo's Don't Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Hair Oil enters the picture. In case you're not familiar, Briogeo is a famed haircare brand run by independent Black beauty mogul Nancy Twine. The brand uses the best of Mother Nature's best to give us all the clean haircare products our strands deserve. This oil is the latest addition to the brand's cult-favorite Don't Despair, Repair! line (you might've come across the best-selling conditioning hair mask before), and it's already become a best-seller, according to InStyle.

So, how does it work? Here's the method behind the hair-nourishing magic: The Briogeo hair oil stands out from the rest for its silicone-free formula, which makes it lightweight on your strands. But don’t let its light-as-air feel fool you, because the oil is packed with hydrating add-ins like ceramides, rose flower oil, and fatty acids to give your tresses a smooth, frizz-free, and glossy — not greasy — finish. Each bottle of oil also has a little rose in it to keep your hair and your #shelfie aesthetic intact.

It all sounds good on paper, but does it step up to the plate? TL;DR: Yes, it absolutely does. To put it simply, the silicone-free formula is a godsend for my mane, whether I slather it on wet or dry strands.

The moisturizing formula gives my parched midsections and ends all of the nourishing hydration they need, without making my oily roots look slicked down or greasy. Plus, it also helped tame my usually frizzy mane into a sleeker, more polished finish without requiring much product, even if I ditch the heated tools and let my hair air dry. I could already tell a difference in the shine of my hair and decrease of shedding in just 2 weeks of using it.

Closing Argument: If I could gift everyone I know the Briogeo hair oil, I would. It gives my hair a salon-like treatment in the comfort of my own home, making it the perfect addition to my quarantine hair routine. If you want better hair with little effort, then grab this Briogeo hair oil, stat.
