Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets only opened its doors in May 2023, but it had been in the works for much, much longer. “It all started 15 years ago,” explains Michelle Raoult, the property’s director of sales and marketing. “That’s when previous owners began their project, and then abandoned construction; the site was deserted until we began to build.”

What’s recently been unveiled was certainly worth the wait. Taking advantage of the existing construction, the 125-suite property is a tranquil, sophisticated oasis on an island that’s only a short private boat ride from Cancun but has the feeling of being worlds away. Once on site, guests can take advantage of five fine-dining restaurants (don’t skip the tacos at Mercado or the pasta at Spezia), two casual eateries, eight bars (including a rooftop terrace with an infinity pool), a private beach, a well-appointed spa, original art by Cesar López Negrete and Wyland, and a rooftop temple made from Mexican bamboo—a choice spot for weddings, parties, or on a recent T&C visit, a morning yoga class.

Upon first look, there’s something almost Mediterranean about the adults-only hotel, but a closer inspection reveals reminders—the furniture, the art, the lighting—of its pride in Mexican design. And fitting in with the locals, Raoult says, has been just as vital to the hotel’s success as charming international guests: “When you speak to the islanders about how they see us,” she explains,”they love that we rescued a place and made something beautiful out of it.”

Here, Raoult shares the details on her own favorite room.

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?

My personal favorite is the Oceanfront Honeymoon Suite. It has a king-sized bed in the middle of the room, multiple seating areas, and it overlooks the ocean. There’s an eight-square-meter terrace with an outdoor shower, a hot tub, and seating areas to enjoy the perfect sunset.

How much does it cost per night?

Around $3,000 per night, including dining experiences, top-shelf drinks, activities, water transfer, butler service, and amenities.

How would you describe the guests and the vibe at the hotel?

Starting with the private boat that brings you from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, you get a sense of arrival that’s completely different. Our guests are mostly couples—the hotel is very romantic—but we also have a lot of groups of friends, solo travelers, and multi-generational families. This is a boutique hotel, but we have enough going on that you can enjoy different atmospheres; it's also a social hotel, so people are here looking to really experience what we have to offer.

What feeling about Isla Mujeres do you hope to impart to guests?

It feels like a private island, but there’s also so much close to you. You’re near Cancun, which is a vibrant destination, but you’re away in a relaxing, secluded area. It’s a barefoot luxury experience, with the authentic warmth of Mexico.

What's one thing about the hotel that you think first-time visitors will find surprising?

We’re on the highest point in Quintana Roo and the ocean is very calm, so visitors will be surprised by how everywhere you look, you see the green and the blue of the water. Also, all of the art, which is often inspired by sea life because we have a strong commitment to protecting the ocean.

What’s a local attraction that you always recommend?

My favorite local attraction is going to Punta Sur. It’s the southern part of the island and is the first place in Mexico that the sun touches when it rises. You can go there using the electric bikes we have on property or take a short walk, and you can see the natural arch and the cliffs. It’s definitely a magical way to begin your day.
