Frankfurt might be best known as one of Germany’s business capitals, but that doesn’t mean it’s a city without charm. On the contrary, even a quick visit can be packed full of delicious meals, fantastic shopping, some very scenic architecture, and visits to any number of marvelous local museums—if you’re pressed for time, we’d recommend taking in the sculpture at the Liebieghaus and chasing it with a stroll along the River Main.

On an otherwise quiet block near the Frankfurt am Main Hauptbahnhof train station sits another delightful surprise: Gekko House, Frankfurt, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. The three-year-old hotel, which boasts a lobby restaurant (don’t skip the excellent breakfast) and a rooftop bar in addition to comfortable, quiet rooms, is an ideal place for both rest and recreation—and makes a fine home base for visitors who want to stroll to the fine shops on Goethestrasse, snap a selfie in front of the timber-framed buildings of Old Town, or explore the bars, clubs and restaurants in the up-and-coming Bahnhofsviertel neighborhood. (I recently checked in during a 24-hour layover in the city and was very glad that I did.)

Here, general manager Antonia Sprungk shares the details on her own favorite room and explains how it shows guests a side of Frankfurt they might not otherwise see.

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?

So that's a very difficult question! I'm a fan of balcony rooms as you can enjoy the view and have a drink on the balcony at night. I also highly recommend one of our junior suites, which have a free-standing bathtub and a nice view over the skyline of Frankfurt.

How much does it cost per night?

Rooms are about €249 per night.

How would you describe the guests and the vibe at the hotel?

Our guests share an appreciation for modern design, urban lifestyle, and a vibrant experience. They’re both business travelers and individuals who aren’t just looking for accommodations, they want to have an experience that resonates with a sense of style and uniqueness. Also, our hotel is not that big. We have about 128 rooms, and a lot of guests come back week after week and we know each other. It makes for a really personal atmosphere.

What feeling about Frankfurt do you hope to impart to guests?

We want our guests to see Frankfurt as an open and engaging city. Our commitment goes beyond traditional sightseeing recommendations. We provide insights from locals and native Frankfurters, ensuring guest experiences the city's various nature. So, our goal is for guests to engage with Frankfurt's vibrant culture and lovely atmosphere.

What’s a local attraction that you always recommend?

Frankfurt is a day drinking destination. So, I highly recommend exploring one of our different farmer's markets. I think every day of the week there’s one somewhere in the city, and these markets provide a peek into vibrant local life and culinary culture. You can have some drinks over there, have nice food, and meet locals. I also always recommend catching a home game of [soccer team] Eintracht Frankfurt in our stadium. The energy in the stadium, the togetherness among fans, and the thrill of the game all contribute to an unforgettable experience.
