Rain boots keep your feet dry and comfortable during wet weather conditions, but they also need to be comfortable enough to wear while walking city streets, hiking muddy trails, or working outdoors. In this guide, we explore the key features to look for when shopping for the best rain boots for women. Looking at aspects like materials, durability, and traction-enhancing outsoles, we tested some of the top brands so you don’t have to.

Our lead tester, Meg Carney is no stranger to the need for rain boots. She grew up in the Midwest and spent years there working in muddy outdoor conditions for various contract jobs. Now, she lives in central Washington where the rainy season (aka mud season) is long and sustained; she relies on waterproof rain boots for walking and hiking with her three dogs for much of the year.

For this specific round of testing, some boots were ones she’s used and trusted for several years, while others she tested for the first time. While testing continues, the first couple months of testing new rain boots for women for this guide included hiking, wading through streams, and carrying out daily chores during muddy days on her property. To get a more objective point of view, she also enlisted the help of a secondary tester with the same shoe size. They both tried all the rain boot designs featured below and were able to compare notes that Meg compiled for this article.

When selecting rain boots, it’s important to compare height, fit, and insulation to choose the right pair for your needs and preferences. To see how each pair of rain boots stacked up, we subjected each model to a water immersion test and multiple hiking tests. We also tested abrasion resistance to gauge durability and slip resistance to guarantee quality and performance when wet.

Following this guide, you can confidently choose the best rain boots for women, regardless of weather conditions. To make the most informed buying decision and to learn more about how they stacked up against each other, check out our comparison chart, buyer’s guide and FAQs  below.

The Grundens Deck Boss Ankle Boots ($110) are a game-changer for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking comfortable, durable footwear in wet weather. They are specifically designed to withstand the rigors of the marine environment and provide a 6-inch ankle height. The thick, cushioning insole offers noticeable shock resistance, ensuring all-day comfort, while the HeiQ Pure anti-odor lining keeps unpleasant odors at bay. The HeiQ SmartTemp thermo-regulating finish also helps keep your feet cool, even on hot days.

Over the last two years, our tester Meg has worn the Grundens Deck Boots nearly every day for winter and spring activities, and they’re still going strong. The materials are highly durable, and the ankle height makes them easy to pair with various outfits and activities. Compared to other rain and waterproof boot options, the wide fit and added support make them feel more like running shoes than clunky rubber boots.

Featuring razor-siped outsoles, these boots offer improved traction on wet surfaces, allowing you to maintain stability whether you’re hiking muddy trails, working on the deck of a boat, or walking along a wet sidewalk running errands. The natural gum rubber outsole is non-marking and ensures durability for long-lasting wear.

Meg has also worn these boots for winter hikes by pairing them with micro-spikes or snow shoes. Paired with thick socks, they provide enough warmth and moisture protection to keep feet comfortable and dry all day.

These boots will continue to perform season after season with proper care, including wiping down with a damp cloth and air drying naturally. As our best overall pick, the Grundens Deck Boss Ankle Boots are a reliable choice for anyone looking for waterproof, comfortable, and high-performance footwear any time of year.

  • Stylish

  • Excellent waterproofing

  • Affordable price

  • Easy to pull on

  • Traction is surprisingly slip-proof

Cons

  • Don’t appear to be the most durable

  • Narrow toe box

Meg Carney

The Asgard Women’s Waterproof Chelsea Boots ($30) are affordable and stylish rain boots perfect for daily wear and office commutes. Crafted with a sturdy PVC exterior, these boots effectively repel moisture and have thick rubber soles with an anti-slip design. These are likely better for casual wear than a work boot, and the black color, along with the ankle design, pairs well with most apparel options.

The cozy textile lining and an EVA foam insole offer added comfort and support, but the narrow-toe box may not be a good fit for women with wide feet. Designed with pull tabs and elastic goring on the sides, these boots are effortless to slide on and off, making them ideal for busy mornings or spontaneous outdoor outings.

After wearing these in a city setting and hiking on rocky, wet surfaces, Meg can confidently say these are a lifestyle boot option. The traction held up well on wet surfaces, but the overall fit isn’t suitable for extended wear or hiking up and down steep terrain. As a budget pick, they are not the most durable option. While the initial testing period for these was just over a month, they were easily scuffed, and she noticed some potential for seams failing with more wear.

Available in sizes 5 to 12 for adults and even a few options for kids, you can choose from a range of versatile colors, including black, dark brown, and burgundy to suit your personal style. The Asgard Women’s Waterproof Rain Boots are indeed a budget pick, but they’re well suited for people looking for a rain boot that is well-suited for daily wear and pairs with most clothing styles.

  • Flexible materials and roll-down shaft

  • Excellent traction

Cons

  • No half sizes

  • Lack of insulation

Meg Carney

The XtraTuf Women’s Salmon Sisters 15-inch Legacy Boots ($160) offer a blend of rugged durability and comfort that’s perfect for outdoor work. They provide excellent value for their quality and functionality. Editor, Chris Kassar, lived in Alaska year-round for seven years and she raves about these boots, citing that she used them almost daily during break-up (aka spring) and that she still uses them on trips to Alaska because their functionality is unmatched for outdoor work in wet conditions or for shooting images of bears from the water. After trying them out for herself, Meg could see the appeal.

These boots outperform many others in their class. They feature thick soles that provide excellent foot support and necessary traction on wet surfaces. Whether tending to farm chores, working on a boat, or digging in your garden, the comfort and protection they offer are invaluable. While they may not be the most stylish option, they feature a brown neoprene design with ocean-inspired prints on the lining, paying homage to the Alaskan Salmon Sisters, who have relied on these boots during their commercial fishing expeditions. They may feel slightly big (especially if you are a half size) and heavy, but these boots are 100% waterproof, slip-resistant, and acid-chemical resistant, ensuring your safety and protection in various environments.

During testing, Meg was surprised to find the traction on these boots was really solid. The rubber sticks on flat, wet surfaces and equally as well on wet, rocky, uneven surfaces. The tall build of the boots and the fit of the neck prevent much moisture from entering the boot, and after jumping and splashing in a stream, Meg found her feet still dry, making them rank higher for protection than all of the boots tested.

The only downside to these boots is that they lack insulation. So, if you depend on them for cold work days, sizing to accommodate linings and thick socks is suggested. The XtraTuf Women’s Salmon Sisters 15-inch Legacy Boots are built to withstand the elements while keeping your feet dry and comfortable whether you’re mucking around in mud during outdoor chores or wading through streams while fishing.

  • Durable construction

  • Comfortable for all-day wear

  • Excellent traction

  • Perfect winter work boot

Cons

  • Can easily get too warm

  • High price

Meg Carney

The Women’s Arctic Sport Mid II Muck Boots ($160) are a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts who brave even the coldest conditions. These mid-height boots are designed to keep feet warm and cozy in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes them well worth the price.

As a cold weather boot, they have been Meg’s go-to winter boots for dog walks, outdoor chores, and more for over six years. And yes, she’s used the same pair that whole time with one minor issue: some rubber was punctured, but that was easily repaired. With a fully lined 5mm CR Flex-Foam neoprene inner boot and fleece lining, these boots offer exceptional insulation. The insulation is so good that you can’t wear them in temperatures over 40 degrees most of the time, or your feet will get too hot. That is the only major downside that we’ve been able to find in all the years of using these boots. The season for use is somewhat limited depending on where you live, especially if you plan to use them for outdoor work.

Featuring a stretch-fit top-line binding to keep cold air out and warm air in, these boots also provide excellent protection with extended rubber coverage. The lightweight, cushioned EVA midsole offers added comfort, while the rugged rubber outsole delivers durability and traction on slick surfaces. When working as a guide in Utah, Meg chose these for the wet, muddy winter season to stay safe and dry. The fit and protection of the boots ensure that your feet stay dry and comfortable even when slopping around in the mud for 12-plus hours a day.

While not as tall as some models, the 11-inch shaft still provides adequate protection, making these boots suitable for various outdoor activities in winter conditions. Whether walking the dog or hiking through snow-covered trails, the Women’s Arctic Sport Mid II Muck Boots offer unbeatable warmth, comfort, and performance in cold climates.

Cons

  • Not good for walking long distances

Meg Carney

The Holly Chelsea Rain Boots from BOGS ($90) effortlessly blend style, comfort, and functionality to create the perfect rainy-day footwear. They’re an excellent value for their performance. With extra thick outsoles and heels, these boots offer a little attitude and durability.

Constructed with BOGS Max-Wick and EverDry technologies, they’re 100% waterproof, while the Rebound cushioning provides a comfortable energy return for walking around town or long days on your feet. The BLOOM eco-friendly, algae-based EVA footbed not only offers superior comfort but also helps clean polluted water habitats, making these boots an eco-conscious choice. While the boots tested for this article did not include this feature, new for the Spring, BOGS has released a Holly Chelsea Zip featuring a zipper that is sure to add even more pazzaz to the styling and a bit more functionality as well.

The comfortable insole and toe box perfectly accommodate narrow-medium feet, but they may not work as well for wide feet. During testing, Meg and secondary testers noticed the stiff soles and materials. While they’re comfortable, they didn’t fit wide feet that well due to the narrow toe box, and the design of the lugs held onto rocks quite easily when hiking. They were slightly more functional for wear in cities or on paved walking paths where the lugs wouldn’t collect a lot of debris. The traction performed well on wet surfaces, but the shoe’s fit wasn’t the most desirable for extended walking.

Compared to other brands, these boots stand out for their superior comfort and fit. So, whether you’re braving the rain or want to make a fashion statement, the BOGS Holly Chelsea Rain Boots will keep your feet dry for casual wear around town.

Western Chief Garden Play Tall Rain Boots

  • Fun and colorful

Cons

  • Not very warm

  • Not the best for wide feet

Meg Carney

The Western Chief Garden Play Tall Rain Boots ($40) bring a burst of color and cheer to rainy days with their vibrant floral design. These boots put a fun spin on the classic rain boot design. Crafted with natural rubber, they provide reliable protection against moisture while ensuring durability for long-term use. The adjustable side buckle hardware adds a touch of vintage charm and allows for more moisture protection as needed. Inside, the moisture-absorbent polyester cotton blend lining keeps feet dry and comfortable throughout the day, while the removable insole provides versatility.

Meg has tried her fair share of rain boots, from expensive designer options to mid-range brands, and for the price, she was surprised by the durability and comfort of Western Chief. These boots don’t crack within a month, they’re easy to slip on and off, and they keep feet dry and comfortable during dog walks or working outdoors.

The design options are somewhat flashy, but for folks who like a splash of color in dreary weather, these are a great fit. The rubber materials are a lot softer than other options on our list and during testing it was noted that the flexibility could contribute to a lack of durability depending on the use case. Despite that, the traction on these boots did well even when the boots were wet, and the fit on the calves did a decent job keeping moisture out of the boots even when splashing around in water.

As a more traditional rain boot design, the construction seems best for less strenuous work and more casual activities. If you’re looking for work boots, you may want something more like the XtraTufs, but these are a great choice for casual wear. Sizing up is recommended for those with wider feet, but Western Chief Garden Play Tall Rain Boots are a reliable and stylish choice that won’t break the bank.

How We Tested Best Rain Boots for Women

For our women’s rain boots buyer’s guide, we conducted comprehensive testing to assess various features and provide accurate and reliable recommendations. Our lead tester, Meg Carney grew up in the rural Midwest, which means a good, sturdy pair of rain boots was a must for her for a long time. She’s owned some boots on our list for 5-plus years, and they’re still going strong, providing an excellent testament to their durability.

For boots new to her, she conducted testing over the course of a couple months. To help get a more objective view of how the boots compared, she enlisted the help of a secondary tester of the same shoe size. They tested the boots during daily wear around town, doing yard work, and on multiple hikes where they walked on flat wet surfaces, rocky terrain, and within streams of moving water. Throughout the month, they were able to do some primary tests together, but the rest of the time, they wore different boots for each activity, swapped boots, and compared notes.

Our testing process involved several key steps to evaluate the performance and suitability of different rain boot models.

Waterproofing: They subjected the rain boots to simulated rain conditions and immersion in water to check for any signs of leakage or water penetration and determine their effectiveness in keeping feet dry.

Comfort/Fit: By wearing the boots for extended periods and walking on different surfaces, they noted cushioned insoles, adjustable closures, and ergonomic designs that enhance comfort and support.

Traction: To assess grip and stability, each boot was put to the test by walking on wet, slippery surfaces that included mud, rocks, and other potential hazards.

Durability: They examined the rain boots’ materials, construction, and overall build quality to ensure they could withstand regular wear and tear over time.

The testing process focused on evaluating waterproofing, comfort, traction, and durability to provide comprehensive insights into the performance of women’s rain boots. Though some of these rain boots work well for hiking, if you’re looking for recommendations for more specific boots, check out our guide to the Best Hiking Boots for Women.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Rain Boots for Women

When selecting the perfect pair of women’s rain boots, several features should be considered, including waterproof materials, durable construction, proper fit, and traction-enhancing outsoles.

Materials and Durability

Many of the best rain boots use waterproof materials like rubber, PVC, or neoprene, which are known for effectively repelling water. While neoprene offers waterproof properties, its production relies on petroleum, emits carbon dioxide, and lacks biodegradability. Other common rain boot materials also pose environmental challenges. PVC, though recyclable, may release dioxins and contain phthalates, while rubber sourcing can be environmentally destructive. EVA foam, while recyclable, faces challenges due to limited collection facilities.

For environmentally conscious consumers, longevity becomes paramount. So, the best option is to maximize the lifespan of your rain boots. Wear them for as long as possible, maintain them, and avoid replacing them unless necessary. Durability is a key focus in our testing processes, emphasizing the importance of investing in boots built to last.

Seams are among the most common points of failure on rain boots. Inspect the seams and bonding methods used in the boots’ construction. Heat-sealed or vulcanized seams offer superior durability compared to glued seams, ensuring that water cannot penetrate through weak points. Additionally, check for reinforced areas like the toe cap and heel, which are prone to wear and tear over time.

Consider the outsole design and material. Look for rain boots with durable rubber outsoles featuring deep treads or lug patterns. By carefully examining materials and durability features, you can identify the best rain boots for women with long-lasting performance and reliable protection.

Breathability

When analyzing the breathability of rain boots, consider comfort and find ways to prevent moisture buildup inside the boots. It is important to note that quality rain boots are made from solid materials that typically don’t allow much airflow through the materials. Still, you can look for breathable linings that allow air circulation while effectively wicking away sweat and moisture from the feet.

A proper fit with enough room for air circulation can also enhance breathability. Avoid overly tight or constrictive boots that may restrict airflow and lead to discomfort.

Comfort and Fit

Look for soft, flexible, and lightweight materials that provide a comfortable fit without causing discomfort or chafing. Some features may contribute to the ergonomics of rain boots. Things like cushioned insoles or footbeds can provide support and shock absorption. Anatomically shaped footbeds or contoured arch support can also enhance comfort.

Finding rain boots that fit correctly helps provide enough room for your toes to wiggle and materials don’t pinch or rub against your feet. I prefer rain boots with a wider toe box because they provide a more natural foot feel.

Here are some tips for finding rain boots that fit:

Measure Feet: Measure the length and width of your feet. Refer to size charts provided by rain boot manufacturers to determine the appropriate size for you.

Consider Sock Thickness: If you plan to wear thick socks with your rain boots, consider their thickness when selecting the size. You may need to size up to accommodate thicker socks.

Try Them On: Whenever possible, try on rain boots before purchasing them. Wear the socks you plan to wear with the boots and walk around to assess the fit and comfort.

Check Toe Room and Width: There should be enough room in the toe box for your toes to wiggle comfortably. Your toes should not feel cramped or squeezed against the front of the boots.

Consider Calf Circumference: If you have wider calves, look for rain boots with adjustable gussets or wider shafts to accommodate your calf size.

By following these tips and ensuring a proper fit, you can find rain boots that are comfortable to wear for daily wear, work, or rainy day dog walks.

Insulation

Insulated rain boots are not necessary for all users. As someone who usually lives in a colder climate, having insulated rain boots, like the Muck Arctic Sport, is an excellent option for winter wear. For standard daily wear, insulation may be less of a priority, but pay attention to the linings and inner materials to better understand the insulating properties.

Materials like neoprene or rubber offer better thermal protection against cold temperatures. Rain boots with an insulated lining, such as fleece or synthetic materials like Thinsulate, provide warmth by trapping body heat inside the boots. Taller shafts, like the XtraTuf 15″ boots, cover more of the leg, providing additional insulation and protection from cold weather.

Some rain boots feature removable liners that can be added or removed based on temperature conditions, allowing for customizable insulation. If you’re looking for winter-specific hiking boots check out our Best Winter Hiking Boots guide.

Traction

Even just walking around town, if you’re wearing rain boots, it is likely wet, muddy, or even a little bit icy. In those conditions, you need a pair of boots with adequate traction. When choosing rain boots with good traction, consider the following factors:

Outsole Design: Look for rain boots with outsoles featuring deep treads or lug patterns. These designs provide better grip and traction on wet, slippery surfaces.

Material: Rubber outsoles offer excellent traction on wet surfaces, providing a firm grip and resistance to slipping.

Lug Depth: Lug depth refers to the height or depth of the tread patterns on the outsole of a shoe or boot. These patterns typically consist of raised, ridged, or grooved sections that provide traction and grip.

A few brands known for offering rain boots with excellent traction include Bogs, Muck Boots, and XtraTuf. Fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts favor the XtraTuf Rain Boots for their slip-resistant outsoles, which offer reliable traction on wet decks and slippery surfaces. If you’re ever in Alaska, you’ll notice it is a trendy brand up there.

Height and Style

Choosing the best height and style of rain boots depends on personal preference, intended use, and practicality. Knowing the options available to you and identifying their intended purpose is a good place to start.

There are three standard rain boot heights:

  1. Ankle-height rain boots offer ease of mobility and are suitable for casual wear or urban settings.

  2. Mid-calf rain boots provide more coverage and protection against splashes and puddles. They are versatile and suitable for both urban and outdoor activities.

  3. Knee-high rain boots offer maximum coverage and protection and are ideal for heavy rain, deep puddles, or outdoor activities like gardening or hiking.

best rain boots for women
best rain boots for women

For everyday wear, look for versatile styles and a height that can transition between activities. I often choose ankle-high boots like Grundens Deck Boots for daily wear, especially in the Spring.

Taller rain boots that offer more durability and protection may be desirable for outdoor activities. XtraTuf and Muck Boots are popular options when seeking boots for gardening, outdoor work, or daily chores.

Beyond height, style may be a factor. The three most common styles of rain boots include:

  1. Classic rain boot styles like the Western Chief Rain Boots feature a variety of colors or patterns, offering timeless appeal and versatility.

  2. Fashion rain boots come in trendy designs, colors, and patterns, allowing you to make a fashion statement or blend in seamlessly with daily workwear like the Asgard Ankle Boots.

  3. Functional rain boots prioritize practicality and performance, with features like adjustable straps, reinforced toes, or insulated linings for added functionality.

Ultimately, choose rain boots that reflect your style preferences and lifestyle while meeting your practical requirements for comfort, functionality, and protection.

FAQ

Are rain boots suitable for everyday wear?

They provide waterproof protection, keeping your feet dry and comfortable during daily activities such as commuting, running errands, or walking the dog. Rain boots come in versatile styles, designs, and heights, allowing you to match them with different outfits for versatile everyday wear. Modern rain boot designs offer improved comfort features like cushioned insoles or insulation, making them suitable for prolonged daily wear.

Should you size up in rain boots?

Sometimes, it may be advisable to size up, especially if you wear thick socks or liners with your rain boots for added warmth or comfort. Sizing up can accommodate differences in foot width or shape, providing a more comfortable fit. Consider the sizing recommendations offered by the manufacturer, and whenever possible, try the boots on in person. Trying on the rain boots with the socks you intend to wear can also help determine the best size. Ultimately, the decision to size up should be based on personal comfort and fit preferences to ensure a satisfactory wearing experience.

Should pants go over or under rain boots?

Whether pants should go over or under rain boots depends on personal preference and the style of the rain boots. Tucking pants into rain boots can help prevent water from entering the boots and keep your pants drier. This method works well with taller rain boots or when wearing skinny jeans or leggings. You may prefer to wear pants over rain boots for a more streamlined look or if the pants are wider or flared. This style is more common with shorter rain boots or when wearing bootcut or wide-leg pants. Check out our guide to Best Hiking Pants for Women to find the best pants for your specific needs.

How do you prevent water from getting into rain boots?

To prevent water from getting into rain boots, you can take several measures:

  • Rain boots should fit snugly around your calves and ankles to minimize gaps where water can enter.

  • Tuck pants into boots to create a barrier that prevents water from seeping in from the top.

  • Consider wearing rain pants.

  • Wear boot liners or waterproof socks inside your rain boots to absorb moisture.

  • If your rain boots have adjustable straps or closures, tighten them properly to seal out water.

  • Be mindful of where you walk and avoid stepping into deep puddles or bodies of water that could overflow into your boots.

  • Inspect your rain boots regularly for any cracks, holes, or damage that could compromise their waterproofing ability.

Are muck boots and rain boots the same thing?

Muck boots and rain boots are similar in that they both offer waterproof protection for your feet in wet conditions. However, they are not exactly the same.

Muck boots are designed for outdoor activities such as farming, gardening, or hunting. They are made with more durable materials for added protection against mud, muck, and other harsh conditions. They typically feature a higher shaft and insulation for warmth, making them suitable for colder temperatures.

Rain boots are more versatile and can be worn for everyday activities in rainy weather, such as commuting, running errands, or walking the dog. They come in different styles, heights, and designs, including ankle-height or knee-high options. Rain boots are also often lighter and more flexible.

There is some overlap in their functionality, but muck boots and rain boots serve slightly different purposes and may have distinct features to suit specific needs and preferences.

Can I wear rain boots for outdoor activities like hiking?

While rain boots provide waterproof protection against moisture, there may be more suitable options for outdoor activities like hiking. Traditional rain boots are typically designed for casual wear and may lack the support, traction, and durability required for hiking on rugged terrain.

It’s recommended to wear hiking boots or shoes specifically designed for outdoor activities when hiking like those found in our guide to Best Hiking Boots for Women.  Still, we have worn rain boots on short day hikes, especially in snowy or muddy conditions, with no issue. If you want rain boots that can stand up to short hikes, look for ones that feature sturdy construction, supportive midsoles, and a more aggressive tread pattern for traction.

A few boots on our list, like the Grunden’s Deck Boots or the BOGS Holly Chelsea, may offer enough traction and support for casual hikes and well-maintained trails.
