Danish royal history was made today: Queen Margrethe II became just the second monarch in Danish history to abdicate the throne. She abdicated in favor of her son, King Frederik X. There was no coronation, or grand affair—instead, Margrethe signed her abdication papers during a meeting at Christiansborg Palace, and then Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik king from the balcony of the palace.

Queen Margrethe traveled in a coach for the proclamation of King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark at Amalienborg Palace Square.

The Associated Press reported, "The abdication document was presented to Margrethe as she sat at a massive table covered in red cloth around which royals and members of the Danish government were seated. Frederik, who was in a ceremonial military uniform adorned with medals, said beside her."

The new King Frederik appeared on the balcony solo at first.
He delivered a speech, and was joined by Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Afterwards, King Frederik was joined by his wife, the new Queen Mary.

They even shared a brief kiss, to cheers.
