The Best Part of the ‘To All the Boys’ Sequel Was That One Masturbation Reference
Today is the day, people. The sequel to TATBILB, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You is FINALLY HERE. And while you might have been very preoccupied while watching and waiting to find out whether Peter and Lara Jean last through the turmoil of the John Ambrose McClaren curveball, you probably overlooked the very best part of the film. Don't worry, I'm here to talk about it. s
There's one minute of dialogue that deserves your undivided attention. About 35 minutes in, the characters are celebrating Valentine's Day. Lara Jean has very high expectations for Peter (which he, spoiler, doesn't meet), and her friend Christine is trying to give her some very important advice.
Christine says: "I got you a little V-Day gift of my own. It's advice. Before you go too far with Kavinsky, make sure you are 100 percent—no, 1,000 percent—sure...." Lara Jean interrupts, "That it's something that I want? I know. Trust me," she says, acknowledging the stereotypical thought process girls are supposed to go through before losing their virginity. "Actually, I was going to say something else. I am trying to make sure you know how to rev your own engine before you let anyone under the hood. I'm just saying, make sure you know how to look after you."
UMM, EXCUSE ME? That is fully a masturbation reference! In a teen comedy! A YA comedy! A teenage girl just told another teenage girl she needs to learn how to masturbate before she has sex with her boyfriend, in a movie geared towards people who are 14. That is, simply put, the best thing that has ever happened... ever. My brain when I heard that line:
That's the only time it's mentioned in the film, and it's not like we then see Lara Jean go home and try to figure out her own body, or anything. The fact that that line is in there is important enough. Sure, there are a lot of adults who will watch P.S. I Still Love You, but the majority of viewers will probably be teens. God knows they're probably not getting that type of education in their sex ed classes, if they're getting sex ed classes at all. At most, they're getting a condom over a banana.
This isn't even the first time in the past year we've seen a masturbation plot in a show that's about, or geared towards, teenagers. PEN15 season 1 had a whole episode about it, and Sex Education is about lots of different aspects of sexual exploration, masturbation included.
The best thing about this being featured in TATBILB 2, though, is that it's probably the most mass-market of all these examples. So many people will watch it, which means a lot of teenagers are going to maybe think about revving their own engine for the first time. That's better than any jeans-in-pocket-twist Peter Kavinsky could ever do.
