It’s come to our attention that even guys who don’t give much thought to their daily wardrobe are highly opinionated about their jammies. Yes, grown men can be reduced to stubborn grade-school boys who turn up their nose at that cool new pair of PJs you’ve just gifted them. However, there’s a wide world of pajamas out there to choose from and odds are, the guy in question hasn’t scoped out all the options, including improved breathability, increased comfort, luxe material and all kinds of new lengths and designs. So we’re here to help you choose a new pair of pajamas to make every guy’s sleep experience better. We’ve found the best pajamas for men: the best overall, most comfortable, best flannel pajamas and more options to make gifting a snap. (Hint: You pretty much can’t go wrong with J, Crew Cotton Poplin Pajamas ($98; $60), which we determined to be solidly the best overall in terms of quality fabric, comfortable fit and classic styling)

A word about successfully gifting PJs: We suggest starting by sleuthing (or sometimes straight up asking about) your giftee’s current sleepwear and even sheets preferences, then gifting him something in that that style or fabric, only better. For example, if he’s a boxer shorts-and-old-T-shirt combo guy, gift him a matching shorts set that doesn’t have a collar or a full pant leg. If he’s always stealing the covers, maybe upgrade his button-front cotton jammies to a pair of Brooks Brothers flannel pajamas ($118; $83) that will keep him toasty without sleeping under all the covers. And if he loves crisp sheets, gift him a pair of Lake Pajamas Pima cotton pants ($86) with an almost satiny, non-stretch softness.

The Best Pajamas for Men at a Glance

How We Chose the Best Pajamas for Men

We took an informal poll of our nearest and dearest men’s preferences. Next we vetted pairs in a range of materials from silks to synthetics, according to reviewers. We looked at elements of durability, washability and noted which pairs had favorable return policies. And we really looked for what’s most comfortable, because all it takes is one poking tag or too-tight design to add to insomnia instead of sweet dreams.  We were sure to include all the most popular styles including classic button-front PJs, T-shirt styles, shorts and even matching dad-child sets. And we assessed the collections from classic sources including L.L.Bean and Nordstrom as well as newer brands including Lake Pajamas and Eberjey.

1.  J.Crew Pajama Set

J. Crew

The most comfortable, not-too-tight, not-too-trendy PJs for men is basically the “just right” in the your man’s bedtime jammies story. They wear like iron and we appreciate the new stripes in addition to the brand’s classic blue. The white piping is a nice touch, too. “Nice for lounging around on warm summer evening. Or any kind of evening,” writes one reviewer. “They wash well, do not fade […and] did not shrink.”

2. Quince Washable Silk Set

Quince

These gorgeous button-front PJs are not only luxurious, with a weighty weave that’s got an elegant drape to it, but also practical. That’s because mulberry silk is naturally thermoregulating and contains amino acids that nourish the skin and are hypoallergenic (i.e., none of that itchy dry winter skin syndrome). The slightly cropped trousers look fashion-forward, as does the indigo blue colorway.

3. Lake Pajamas Pima Cotton Pants

Lake Pajamas

“After only wanting to wear Lake pajamas myself, I bought these for my husband so he could also enjoy the silky softness of Lake pima cotton,” writes one reviewer. “He was wearing them when I got back from a business trip and they look great, slimmer than his regular pajama pants but not so tapered he feels uncomfortable. Success!” The softness secret here is that these are made of high-quality Pima cottons, a species of cotton that has longer, slicker cotton fibers that are woven into a really soft, super strong and coveted fabric. These pants coordinate with the long-sleeve Lake Pima cotton T-shirt ($78).

4. Hanes X-Temp Pajamas Set

Amazon

This raglan-style set gets our vote for having a classic T-shirt and pants style, but in an updated tech fabric that’s a boon for hot sleepers. One reviewer writes, “These fit as desired. Not loose, and only a little extra material in the length when standing. Not restricting at all. I usually run warm and it's difficult to find pajamas that my body can regulate its temperature in. I usually wear boxers an use a throw blanket if I get cold. I've been wearing these since they arrived and they are so comfortable. Not too warm, and perfect in a 64ºF to 74ºF house.” Available in seven colorways and both shorts and long pants silhouettes, this is a great option for any guy who thinks a PJ set just isn’t for him.

5. Brooks Brothers Flannel Pajamas

Brooks Brothers

Preppy clothier Brooks Brothers has offered these best-selling flannel pajamas for years, and no wonder. The straight arms and legs are neither too baggy nor restricting, and there are no pockets to bunch up the pants. The drawstring waist will be beloved for its simplicity and comfort or be slightly annoying, depending on if the wearer finds he has to re-tie it to stay up. But no matter, the quality cotton plaid looks great, and the lightweight and machine-wash durability of the fabric makes caring for these easy.

6. Sleepy Jones Henry Pajama Set

Brooklinen

This is the pair of PJs you’re going to want to build brunch around, they’re so attractive and comfortable they ought to be in pictures. Indeed, the brand recommends wearing the shirt as day wear as well as sleepwear, since it has a slightly narrower body than the old-fashioned boxy pajama tops. Add to that the back and side pockets of the pants, and the stylish cuffed hem, and this is a winner in your choice of two stripes, a classic Breton blue or a multi-cool hued ribbon stripe.

7. Cozy Earth Bamboo Pajama Pants

Cozy Earth

Temperature-regulating, these stretchy pajama pants look good enough to wear out and about. He’ll be proud to do so, since they’re constructed with fabric made from bamboo, the natural grass that uses less water than cotton and has a fast growth pattern to benefit its farmers. Even if a guy has no hint of the conservation, he’ll love these anyway, since they are soft and drapey, practically cuddling the wearer. “Just like every Cozy Earth purchase, these bamboo pajama pants are so soft, cool and comfortable,” writes one reviewer. “I ordered them for my son and he loves them. He wears the bottoms as loungewear as well as for sleep. They keep him at just the right temperature for lounging and sleeping.”

8.  L.L.Bean Cotton Knit Pajamas

L.L. Bean

We appreciate that these pajamas offer as close to customization as you’re going to get off the rack: five sizes, four color combinations and three lengths. And all in a three-button Henley style that is going to suit everyone, including guys who don’t like the feel of a collar choking them as they sleep. “These are well made and thick pajamas. Personally, not something I would wear during the warmer months, but am looking forward to using them more often this fall and winter,” writes one reviewer. “I appreciate the fact that they send an extra button. At first I was a little put off by the price of these pajamas. But after receiving them I think you actually get what you pay for. I think these are going to last a lot longer than those cheap ones you buy.”

Dagsmejan

High-tech fabric is the sell for this boxed gift set that includes a T-shirt-style top and jogger-style bottoms as well as a silk sleep mask. Wholly sourced and sewn in Europe, this brand set out to make a PJ set that is four times as breathable as most knits, as well as half as heavy as most warm pajamas. They did this using a sustainable fabric formula that combines eucalyptus-derived Lyocell and odor-resistant wool with a bit of stretch. “The pajamas are very comfortable to wear, the temperature regulation is outstanding, neither too warm nor too cold,” writes one reviewer. The brand also says they’re supremely moisture wicking, and there’s a free 14-day return policy.

That’s the story with designer jammies from this London-based company that prints elegant designs onto organic cotton that’s cut and sewn in Portugal and available in sizes for the whole family. We see these as perfect vacation wear as well as pajamas, since the prints are festive, eye-catching and the short-sleeve shirt and straight-leg pants can be mixed and matched with streetwear.

What to Consider When Looking for the Best Pajamas for Men

What Is the Best Material for Men’s Pajamas?

Machine-washable fabrics are key, as well as durable weaves that can withstand the rigors of frequent laundry as well as nighttime tossing and turning. Cotton is the age-old favorite, but increasingly, eco-conscious options like bamboo-derived viscose and Lyocell from eucalyptus are popular options. We recommend sticking to these natural fibers, including ever-warm wool and temperature-regulating silk, except when synthetics are used to enhance performance.

What Pajamas Material Is Best for Hot Sleepers?

Washable silk is prized for its ability to even out sleeping body temperatures, as are tech fabrics that thermoregulate.
