Air Signs: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius make up the air signs. “Air is the element that connects us all… It’s a lively and invigorating energy that likes to keep things light, fun, and fresh—drab and dark colors simply won’t do,” Darin says. “The air element represents our ability to communicate, connect, and express ourselves through ideas and thoughts, so light and airy colors found in nature like pale blues, yellows, and purples are a great fit to keep the space feeling energized and bright, while deeper cool tones (blues and purples) with steel gray undertones keep things elevated and interesting for intellectual air signs.”

Gemini

Since Gemini is the intellectual air sign ruled by Mercury—the planet of thoughts, ideas, and communication—Darin says that yellow is the perfect paint color for their space.

“Pale yellow is the perfect color to inject cheerful energy into a Gemini’s space and invigorate the mind,” she explains. “Yellow sparks bright ideas and curiosity, and a pale yellow like Benjamin Moore’s Hawthorne Yellow or Farrow and Ball’s Dayroom Yellow will keep things airy and timeless.” Meanwhile, if you like brighter, funkier hues, she says that Farrow & Ball’s Babouche is a “definite conversation starter.”

Libra

“Libra is the charismatic air sign ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, art, and luxury,” Darin says. While Libras value internal balance and harmony, they also have a knack for visual aesthetics.

“Dusty tones such as mauve, lavender, and gray speak to Libra's romantic side, but they should be neutral enough to satisfy Libra’s lust for symmetry and balance,” Darin says. “For a timeless gray that goes with everything, Benjamin Moore’s Balboa Mist is perfect, with a balance of warm and cool tones.” Meanwhile, Darin says that Benjamin Moore’s Dreamy Cloud is the perfectly balanced pale lilac, while Sherwin Williams’s Venus Pink is ideal for Libras looking to really lean into the romantic side of their sign.

Aquarius

Where Gemini values connection and Libra prioritizes harmony, Aquarius likes to stand apart, Darin says. “Aquarius is the brilliant individualist and visionary who loves to stand apart from the crowd.” She adds that Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, which signifies liberation, freedom, and rebellion. “This forward-thinking air sign is a futurist who loves to make up their own rules and shake up the norm,” Darin says.

With this in mind, she says that bolder, cool-toned paint colors, such as deeply saturated blues, greens, and purples, will help bring an Aquarian’s space to life. “They inject a spark of electricity and uniqueness into an Aquarian’s space that keeps them feeling quirky and unconventional,” she reveals, noting that Clare’s Cosmic Vibes (a medium dusty purple) will cater to the sign’s enigmatic side, while Backdrop’s Sicily or Cyprus (a medium-warm saturated teal) will inject intrigue into the space, satisfying the sign’s eccentric side.

Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius make up the fire signs. “Fire is the element of passion, energy, courage, and drive; it is the element that inspires confidence and shows up loud and proud,” Darin says. “Fire is bold, brave, and doesn’t play small; it encourages our playful side and asks us how we can express more authentically, from the heart and show up bigger and brighter.”

As such, Darin says that fire signs should douse their spaces in bold, bright colors—the showier they are, the better.

Aries

“Aries is the initiative fire sign ruled by Mars, the planet of war, passion, and drive; Aries is the bold and courageous warrior that dives headfirst into its passions and sparks inspiration with bold statements,” Darin reveals. “Fiery, bold, and bright in nature, Aries is a natural born leader so statement-making reds are perfect to match their larger-than-life energy.”

When looking for the perfect dramatic hue, Darin says to consider deep crimsons and garnets, like Benjamin Moore’s Cottage Red or Farrow and Ball’s Brinjal. “To turn the bold energy of the red planet up to 11, a true lipstick red like Benjamin Moore’s Ruby Red hits the spot,” she adds.

Leo

“Leo is the shiny and show-stopping fire sign ruled by the brightest star in our sky, the Sun,” Darin says, noting that the sign isn’t afraid to express itself, no matter the situation, as Leos live for dramatic flair. “Leo is romantic and utterly playful and loves to take up space and be in the spotlight. The bolder and more audacious the better for Leo because self-expression and authenticity is the name of the game.”

With this in mind, Darin suggests reaching for cans of bold, saturated jewel tones when painting a Leo’s space. “Think about an eye-catching unique color—like 2023 Pantone Color of the Year, Viva Magenta [Benjamin Moore’s Rose Parade is a close match]—to liven up your space, or even a vibrant golden tone (like Benjamin Moore’s Ochre or Chartreuse) to bring the warmth and confidence of the sun to your space,” she says.

Sagittarius

“Sagittarius is the brazen and adaptable fire sign ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion and wisdom,” Darin shares. “This fiery explorer and knowledge seeker is the epitome of faith and optimism, and moves to the beat of their own drum, trusting their inner compass and instincts and keeping things bold and playful.”

Since Sagittarius loves embracing the unknown, Darin says deep, expressive paint hues are best. Think: blue, teal, and green tones, reflective of the wonders of the world, she says. Specifically, she recommends Benjamin Moore's Gentleman’s Gray or Hidden Sapphire, as she says both are great representations of Sagittarius's uniqueness and bold spirit.

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn make up the earth signs. “The earth element is what grounds us; it reflects the abundance of nature and is calming, grounded, and practical,” Darin says. “Warm and natural tones–light whites, beige, and warm grays—add serenity to earth signs’ spaces and are practical enough to fit with any decor. Versatile colors like sage and forest green also bring the earth element in.”

Taurus

Taurus has a bit of overlap with Libra, as it’s also ruled by Venus. “Taurus is ruled by the senses and loves to make a luxurious space filled with creature comforts bringing the abundance of nature inward,” Darin says. “Taurus rules value, worth, and money, so naturally the color green is a perfect fit for Taureans as it’s the color of Venus, the heart chakra, and of course, money.”

While many green paint colors exist, Darin suggests opting for a soft sage green like Benjamin Moore’s Saybrook Sage. To really tap into the luxe factor, she recommends using a deeper, more luxurious green tone, such as Benjamin Moore’s Vintage Vogue or Farrow and Ball’s Green Smoke.

Virgo

“Virgo is the brilliant earth sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of intellect,” Darin says. “Virgo is deeply connected to the earth, grounded, and organized, and is an innate perfectionist.”

Since Virgos crave perfection, Darin says that a tidy, clean-looking space translates to a calm, clear mind. “This is why warm creams and gentle beiges suit Virgo just right,” she says. “Clare’s Like Buttah is a luxe buttery beige perfect for Virgo’s discerning tastes and Backdrop’s Palo Santo and Mood Lighting do modern cream tones just right.”

Capricorn

“Capricorn is the sophisticated and dependable earth sign that exudes excellence,” Darin says. “Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is no-nonsense, valuing practicality over trends; desiring tradition and design that will endure.”

Because of this, Darin says that Capricorns are the perfect candidate for crisp, balanced whites. “They add a timeless elegance fit for the impeccable tastes of the Capricorn, which will stand the test of time,” she explains. “Designer favorite Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore might just be the perfect neutral white for Capricorn because it’s not too warm and not too cool and it works in literally any space with any decor.”

Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces make up the water signs. “The water element is all about emotions; it’s the ability to feel everything and flow with our emotional tides,” Darin says. “Water signs are incredibly intuitive and creative; they express their emotions often through the arts as musicians, artists, and performers because they feel everything deeply and are moved through art.”

Thanks to their creative nature and ability to feel so deeply, water signs require calming environments to help add balance and peace to their lives. “Calming pastels reminiscent of the sand and sea are great for water signs, while deeper tones speak to their emotions,” Darin adds.

Cancer

“Cancer is the intuitive and emotional water sign ruled by the moon, which rules our emotions,” Darin says. “The moon changes phases rapidly, so Cancer is able to feel the full range of emotions and flow with them, often changing from moment to moment.”

With that kind of mental momentum, it’s important to create a serene space with the use of proper paint colors. “Warm, dusty corals and sandy pinks are a fresh fit for Cancer’s creative side while feeling calm and warm at the same time,” Darin says. “Backdrop’s 36 Hours in Marrakesh is a glamorous earthy pink that’s dramatic enough to help Cancer’s home stand apart, and Benjamin Moore’s Coral Dust is a great option for a lighter, fresher vibe.”

Scorpio

“Scorpio is the deep and dramatic water sign whose modern ruler is Pluto, the planet of power and transformation,” Darin says. “Scorpio abhors a lack of depth and loves to experience the full range of emotions, embracing the darker parts of life and deep psychological experiences.”

When picking the perfect paint color for a Scorpio’s space, Darin says to hold deeply pigmented, black-ish hues on a pedestal. “Dark and dramatic is the name of the game for Scorpios but because of their naturally unique and creative side, not just any black will do,” she says. “Almost blacks with rich purple or charcoal undertones—like Benjamin Moore’s Velvet Cloak or Wrought Iron—speak to Scorpio's need for depth.”

Pisces

“Pisces is a creative and empathetic water sign whose modern ruler is Neptune, the planet of dreams, illusions, and mysticism,” Darin says. “Pisces is incredibly creative and artistic, associated with the imagination, cinema, and film; Pisces loves to create and play and is the ultimate believer in faith and optimism.”

Above all, Pisceans are incredibly in tune with their emotions. “Pisces flows like water throughout life feeling everything and understanding the interconnectedness of all things,” Darin says, noting that, because of this, water-inspired hues are great paint colors for Pisces. “Pale blues, seafoam, and colors of the sea are a great fit for the creative and magical Pisces.” Specifically, she recommends fresh-yet-dramatic shades like Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Teal and Behr’s In The Moment.
