Relax and enjoy your outdoor space

Your patio, deck, or balcony can be a relaxing space to read or unwind, thanks to a comfortable outdoor chaise lounge. This type of furniture can also be used as a pool lounger, depending on the material, so you have a great spot to soak up the sun or take a break between dips in the pool.

Outdoor living expert Erin Hynes, the author of numerous books on gardening and outdoor living, says the main consideration with choosing a chaise lounge is that it is easy for you or your guests to get in and out of and that it is sturdy, "so that you don't find yourself dumped on the ground because the lounger flipped."

A chaise lounge should also be comfortable; the best have backs and footrests that adjust easily and smoothly. Also, consider portability—either to move it and mow the grass or to the beach—and if it has materials that can withstand the elements, or if it needs to be stored.

We researched dozens of outdoor chaise lounges and evaluated them on durability, comfort, style, and ease of use, to give you options to suit your needs and space.

Best Overall: Christopher Knight Home Oxton Mesh Patio Chaise Lounge

Buy at Target.com

Buy at Overstock.com

What We Like

  • Made of rust-proof aluminum

  • Comfortable, weather-resistant mesh

  • Arms stay cool in the sun

  • Easy to clean

What We Don't Like

  • Other metal parts can get hot in full sun

  • Doesn't stack or fold

After researching dozens of outdoor chaise lounges, we chose the Christopher Knight Oxton Outdoor Gray Mesh Aluminum Chaise Lounge as our best overall because it is relatively affordable, weather-resistant, and lightweight enough to move in and out of the sun, or into storage if necessary. While it isn’t the most stylish option on this list, it has a classic look that can blend into any decor, and you can add outdoor pillows for a pop of color, or for a headrest if needed.

Unlike outdoor furniture made out of other materials, when left outside for extended periods of time, this powder-coated aluminum lounge won’t rust or rot. Plus, although metal can be a problem since it can get hot, this style has toppers on the arms so you have a relatively cool place to rest your elbows. Keep in mind though, that the other metal parts can be hot to the touch if left out in the sun.

If you are lacking in storage space, or tend to forget to cover your outdoor furniture when not in use, you’ll especially appreciate this pick. This lounge is comfortable but doesn't rely on cushions, which can get damaged by weather and need to be replaced unless covered or stored.

Aside from metal and mesh, Christopher Knight also makes a synthetic wicker version of this lounge, for a more traditional look. Both options are easy to clean, which is essential in outdoor furniture since it inevitably collects dust, tree litter, pollen, mildew, and other stains.

Best Budget: Adams Plastic Adjustable Chaise Lounge

Buy at Acehardware.com

Buy at Lowes.com

What We Like

  • Affordable and durable

  • Wheels for portability

  • Adjusts to four positions

  • Stackable

What We Don't Like

  • Not as comfortable as other options

It can be hard to find a chaise lounge for around $100, but we think the Adams White Resin Adjustable Chaise Lounge, is an excellent option. This resin lounge has a simple and classic design and is made to withstand the elements without needing to be stored, so you can have years of use. We also love that it’s just under 20 pounds, and has wheels, so you can easily move it around your pool area or patio.

Dark or bright plastics tend to fade over time, but this white chaise lounge stays clean and bright looking longer. And if it does get dirty, it’s easy to scrub or power wash clean. We also appreciate that it’s stackable so you can purchase several and stack them for a smaller footprint when not in use. While hard plastic isn’t the most comfortable option, you can easily add an outdoor pillow or beach towel if you want something a little more cozy—we think its durability and price make it well worth the extra step.

Best Splurge: Frontgate Isola Chaise Lounge

Buy at Frontgate.com

What We Like

  • Stylish design

  • Wicker-like, breathable, fabric

  • Teak wood frame

  • Comfortable

What We Don't Like

  • Teak can stain when new

  • Recommended to be stored when not in use

We think the Isola Chaise Lounge in Natural Finish has it all: a beautiful, distinctive design with quality, durable materials. It's made from teak, an elegant wood that weathers beautifully to a silver gray. Although expensive, we think it’s worth the splurge if you are looking for a stylish, long-lasting seating option for your patio, deck, or even pool area, and don’t mind the upkeep or patina (weathered look over time) of teak.

The seating is made from artificial wicker, which looks like the real thing but is far more durable. Plus, because of its design, this chaise is comfortable to lounge in, without the need for cushions that need to be stored, covered, or cleaned. Keep in mind, besides the changing look of teak, the oils could leach out and stain a patio in damp weather so you may want to place a rug underneath if you are concerned. It’s recommended that you store this chaise when not in use, so plan for adequate storage.

Full Review:The Perfect Seat for Sun Lounging: Sunjoy Zero Gravity Chair

What We Like

  • Multiple reclining positions

  • Lightweight and portable

  • Comfortable

  • Easy to set up

What We Don't Like

  • Can be hard to get in and out of

We tested the Sunjoy Zero Gravity Chair and found it to be an excellent option in this category—we love that it moves with you as you sit up or lie back, so you don’t have to get up or struggle to adjust it to the desired position. The head pillow is also adjustable, so you can move it to the perfect height on the chair. We also love that the fabric stays cool and comfortable— it doesn’t get hot on otherwise steamy days. You can choose from up to six colors to match your style as well.

Keep in mind that this type of furniture isn’t for everyone. Zero gravity chairs can be hard to get into. They also don’t adjust completely flat, like most chaise lounges on this list. However, we think this lightweight, affordable chair makes an excellent addition to most outdoor spaces and is portable enough to be taken on camping trips or even for tailgating.

Best Double: Tangkula Outdoor Rattan Daybed

Buy at Amazon.com

Buy at Target.com

What We Like

  • Good value

  • Durable synthetic wicker

  • Multiple color choices

  • Roomy

What We Don't Like

  • Thin cushions

  • Hard to move

The Tangkula Patio Rattan Daybed provides a fun spot to entertain poolside, or even on your lawn or deck. We’ve used this double chaise lounge in our own backyard and found it to be luxuriously sized, and sturdy. In fact, according to the manufacturer, it has a weight capacity of 800 pounds. Although we did have to put it together, it took less than an hour with the work split between two people. Be sure to pay close attention to the directions though, since some of the screws should be loose while you are lining up the pieces (this part we did find a bit tricky).

This lounge is designed to withstand the elements, although you will want to keep the cushions covered or stored when not in use (especially if you choose white). Although they are zippered, the covers are not machine washable, and muddy dog prints or spills can be hard to remove (we tried!). Also, note that the cushions are thin, but we still found them to be comfortable and we love that they are foldable and easy to store. You will want to plan on where to place this large lounge and make sure you have the right space since it is over 50 pounds and a bit awkward to move around.

Price at time of publish: $260

Dimensions: 61 x 52 x 27.5 inches | Material: Synthetic rattan/wicker over steel | Weight: 53 pounds | Weight capacity: 800 pounds

Best Wood: Safavieh Newport Chaise Lounge With Side Table

Buy at Amazon.com

What We Like

  • Variety of wood finishes and cushion colors

  • Attached side table

  • Wheels for portability

  • Classic, versatile design

What We Don't Like

  • Cushions should be stored or covered

The SAFAVIEH Newport Adjustable Chaise Lounge Chair is an excellent wood option because it has a classic look that will work in any outdoor space, and thanks to its wheels, it can be easily moved so you can enjoy it wherever you are entertaining. We also love that you can choose from different finishes (natural, black, and gray) and cushion colors, including blue and white stripes for a coastal look. Other thoughtful touches include cushion ties, so you don’t have to worry about them slipping or blowing off and a reclining back, with multiple angles to choose from.

As with most outdoor cushions, it’s best to keep them covered or stored to continue looking their best. But we think its classic look, versatility, and durability (it has an 800-pound weight limit), make it worth the extra step. We also think it’s a good value, at under $300, especially considering it comes with cushions and an attached side table.

Price at time of publish: $247

Best Wicker: Gymax Outdoor Wicker Chaise Lounge

Buy at Wayfair.com

Buy at Walmart.com

What We Like

  • Zippered outdoor cushions included

  • Traditional wicker look

  • 6-position adjustable back

  • Anti-slip, non-scratch feet

What We Don't Like

  • Single color choice

  • Off-white cushions show dirt easily

Wicker is a beautiful, traditional choice for outdoor chaise lounges, and synthetic wicker is even better—unlike natural wicker, it will last for years if left outdoors. Wicker chaise lounges often have highly modern styling, but we think this option from Gymax stands out because of its vintage, almost Victorian style. We also appreciate the versatility, since this lounge offers six reclining positions, and the addition of a lumbar pillow when you are craving a little extra comfort poolside or on the deck.

We do wish it was available in other colors besides white which shows dirt easily–and outdoor furniture always gets dirty, even if just from sunblock on your legs. Fortunately, the cushions have zippered covers, which means you can remove them for washing. We also like that they are attached to the lounge, so they shouldn’t fall off or need to be adjusted often. The feet are also anti-slip (so the whole lounge shouldn’t move when you sit), and anti-scratch so you don’t have to worry about them messing up the surface.

Best Portable: King Camp Folding Chaise Lounge Chair

Buy at Amazon.com

Buy at Kingcampoutdoors.com

What We Like

  • Quality construction

  • Folds easily

  • Lightweight

  • Available in multiple colors and 2-packs

What We Don't Like

  • No straps or carrying/storage bag

A portable chaise lounge is excellent for toting to the beach, camping, or even to that back corner of your yard. We love the King Camp Adjustable 5-Position Folding Chaise Lounge because it is lightweight yet sturdy, and folds and unfolds easily. It’s also available in different colors, or 2-packs to suit your space and style.

Along with four other adjustable positions, this lounge will adjust to allow you to lay flat, an important option if you want to fully relax at the beach or use as a camp cot overnight. No matter which position you choose, it's comfortable once you get it set up, with a nicely designed central support bar that is curved so it doesn’t feel like you’re laying on a steel rod.

Although this chair is easy to fold and store, you don’t have to worry about rushing to put it away in inclement weather. The fabric is waterproof and made to resist UV damage and the frame has a solid, rust-resistant construction, unlike many other portable options. However, it does not have straps or a storage bag for easy carrying, but since it's lightweight, it shouldn’t be too much of an inconvenience.

What We Like

  • Made with rust-proof cast aluminum

  • Three finishes available

  • Cushions also available

  • Wheels make it easy to move

What We Don't Like

  • Metal can get hot in full sun

  • Cushions not included

Just about anything is easier to use when it has wheels, and outdoor furniture is no exception. Whether you're moving it to mow the grass or store it inside for the season, a chaise lounge with wheels makes the process easy. This stylish version is made of rust-proof cast aluminum with large wheels that can handle rougher terrain, like grass. This style might not fit everyone’s aesthetic (although we think this would be a great addition to a garden), but you can always add your own cushions to customize the look. You can purchase them separately, or choose the Iinhaven option that comes with cushions.

We appreciate that this chaise has five reclining positions, and is also available in other finishes, including white and bronze. Just note that as with other metal options, this lounge can get hot, so be careful when handling on hot days or keep it in a shady spot.

The Christopher Knight Oxton Outdoor Gray Mesh Aluminum Chaise Lounge is our top choice for most spaces, including poolside, patios, or even lawns. It has a simple design that can withstand the elements, is comfortable without needing cushions, and can be easily hosed down. We also love the budget-friendly Adams White Resin Adjustable Chaise Lounge because it is durable with a classic design, Plus, because it is affordable and versatile, you can purchase several and stack them for a smaller footprint.

What to Look for in a Chaise Lounge

Material

If you are looking for outdoor furniture that will last for years to come, look for fabrics, cushions, and frames made specifically for outdoor use. Fabrics should be UV- and mildew-resistant and the cushions should be filled with outdoor-quality foam that dries quickly. Metal frames should be rust-resistant, including the fittings. For example, our best overall option, the Christopher Knight Oxton Mesh Patio Chaise Lounge is made of rust-resistant aluminum and mesh and does not need to be stored. Wood should be of a species that is naturally rot-resistant, such as teak, cedar, or redwood. Our best splurge pick, the Frontgate Isola Chaise Lounge is made of teak and will weather beautifully over time.

That said, it can be hard to predict if a chaise lounge will last very long with minimal damage outside for very long. So it's smart, when available, to purchase an extended warranty or buyer protection that will provide a refund if a piece starts to weather or fade in just several months.

Size

Like most furniture, an outdoor chaise lounge should fit your space and needs. Consider the area or areas you would like to place it and who may be using it. Some chaise lounges, like the Tangkula Outdoor Rattan Daybed are made for two people and have a higher maximum weight limit for extra durability. If you are planning on moving it around your space, or want a versatile option you can take to the beach or camping, consider an option that is lightweight and folds, like our best portable option, the King Camp Folding Chaise Lounge Chair. Also, if it's made of material that needs to be stored, make sure it's sized to fit your storage space.

 Style

Choose a chaise lounge that fits in with the style of the rest of the outdoor space where it will be used. Consider how fabric colors, for example, work with any other outdoor furniture or the style of your backyard. If you are planning on moving it around your yard or patio, look for an option with wheels, like the Homestyles Sanibel Outdoor Metal Chaise Lounge.

Most of all, be sure to choose one that is comfortable for you and your needs. If you order it online, check return or exchange policies in case your chaise lounge ended up looking more comfortable than it really was. Most lounges recline at different angles for sitting up, laying flat, or somewhere in between. Many come with cushions that provide extra comfort but need to be covered or stored when not in use. Others are made of comfortable fabric, without the need for cushions.

Storage is also an issue with this large piece of outdoor furniture. Consider models that stack or fold for easier storage indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best type of material for an outdoor chaise lounge?

Look for fabrics and cushions that specify that they are made for outdoor use. "Even if your chaise lounge is on a porch or shady spot, it [may still] be exposed to a lot of sun and a lot of moisture," says Erin Hynes, author of numerous outdoor living and garden books. Look for those that specify that they are for outdoor use and made fade- and mildew-resistant, and dry quickly after rain. And when selecting color, keep in mind that lighter colors show dirt more quickly, but deep or bright colors tend to fade more quickly.

For frames, if you go with metal, look for rust resistance. All aluminum or quality powder-coated steel is highly rust-resistant. If you choose wood, choose one that will naturally resist rot, such as teak, cedar, and redwood.

How do you care for an outdoor chaise lounge?

"The beauty of most outdoor chaise lounges is that you can hose them off to remove dirt, sweat, sunscreen, etc." Hynes says. Do quick spot cleanups with a damp cloth dampened with a solution of warm water and dish detergent.

For a heavy plastic or wood platform chaise lounge, you can also do a light annual cleaning with a pressure washer to remove grime from the frame and cushions.

It's smart to take in cushions and fabrics when you are not using them. Or stash them in one of the plastic outdoor cushion boxes made specifically for the purpose. They'll last far longer and stay cleaner between uses. You can also buy special covers for your outdoor furniture.

During the off-season, such as winter, it's wise to store furniture in a sheltered place or under the outdoor covers to extend their life by many years.

Where can you use an outdoor chaise lounge?

Outdoor chaise lounges can create a relaxing oasis almost anywhere. Depending on which option you choose, you can place them poolside, on a deck, patio, yard, or even in your garden. If you choose a portable option, you can even take it to the beach, on camping trips, or to your next tailgate. Just be sure to place it on a stable surface, and that the feet are designed to be scratch-resistant if that's a concern.

Why Trust The Spruce?

This list was researched and written by Veronica Lorson Fowler, a freelance writer for The Spruce. She specializes in home and outdoor products and is an avid gardener. She's purchased (and returned) a number of chaise lounges for her own outdoor spaces.

To put together this list of best chaise lounges, she considered factors such as durability, comfort, style, and ease of use. She prioritized top picks made from quality materials with a smart design that are also a good value. Fowler also consulted garden expert Erin Hynes, author of numerous outdoor living and garden books.

Jenica Currie, Commerce Editor for The Spruce, added additional options and reporting. Currie has tested many different types of outdoor accessories, including fire pits and solar lights. She also loves having a variety of outdoor furniture in her backyard for entertaining, including our best double option, the Tangkula Outdoor Rattan Daybed, which is a favorite of everyone in the family, including her dogs.
