The Best Minimalist Jewelry Brands for Everyday Rings, Studs, Necklaces and More.

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission.

The most intriguing part about minimalist jewelry is that, depending on who you ask, it is something entirely different for everyone. To some fashion lovers, it’s simple and dainty pieces that may include minimal diamonds, mixed metals, tiny stud earrings, or perhaps a chunky solid-silver ring. To others, it can include a 4-carat diamond tennis necklace, 24K gold ear cuff, a heavy, solid, 14K gold chain-link bracelet, and perhaps even an emerald tennis bracelet for a hint of everyday color. While the minimal jewelry trend might not include large, colorful stones and ornate in-your-face detailing, one thing you can count on is subtle details that require just as much expertise and craftsmanship as something more blingy.

Laura Lombardi

Laura Lombardi, a New York-based jewelry designer who grew up between the US and Tuscany, is known for sculptural yet refined designs. She has perfected twisted hoops and graphic chains, each with timeless ease. Before launching her business in 2010, she spent years honing her fine arts background, working in a fine jewelry supply store where she built jewelry by hand from upcycled materials. When preparing each collection, Lombardi sources vintage and archival materials to upcycle into her designs and production. She loves to mold the past with the present by incorporating a single chain link or reimagining parts of objects from the past. Every piece is designed and manufactured with a focus on non-traditional materials, including recycled brass, and made by hand by small, locally owned businesses throughout the East Coast. In 2019, she opened her first flagship showroom in New York. Not only do Lombardi and her team focus on incredible craftsmanship and sustainable practices from the initial design concept to the finished piece, but also, her price point is attainable. So it’s no surprise their pieces sell out fast. Their designs look amazing when worn with bright solid colors or classic neutral-monochromatic looks. She doesn’t use stones, so the metals do all the talking. Her Luna ring is one of the chicest rings of the season. Wear it by itself or stack it with your favorite signet ring. The Strada choker is the perfect chain necklace to wear over your favorite thin knit sweater this fall or with a flannel button-down. We suggest finishing it with the Sienna choker for a cool-girl layered look.

Sophie Buhai

A fifth-generation Los Angeles native, Sophie Buhai has been designing beautifully crafted modern heirlooms since 2015. Buhai counts Art Deco and Viennese Secession as two of her signature design influences. “The output at that time is just unbelievable,” says Sophie Buhai, founder of her namesake modern jewelry and accessories brand. “It feels more modern than anything made today. I look at work from that period a lot. The use of materials and the simplification of form are very interesting. I love things that are pure in form, geometric, and bold. I also prefer materials that are not typically considered ‘precious’ or ‘luxury’.” Buhai says the houses’ beaded stone collars are one of their signature designs. “I just love seeing people wearing big beads again! It’s a look that many women in their 70s wear on the Upper East Side, but I love the younger generation reinterpreting it with their style. Our silver hoops and chains are always staples of the collection as well. I wear hoops and hair accessories almost every day. They make me feel put together very easily — and that works well as a working mom!”

Her Barbara chain necklace is the perfect statement-minimal chain to wear every day. If you love silver and are looking for something minimal, modern, and timeless, we also love her Everyday hoop earrings and Shell ring. Buhai uses recycled and responsibly sourced sterling silver and gold as well as local production, allowing them to support their local community and reduce waste and resource use. Whether heading to the beaches of Menorca or meeting with your CEO, these pieces are polished and great for wherever you may be headed.

What to Look for When Purchasing Minimalist Jewelry

As we enter the new fall season, look at your everyday jewelry uniform and take stock of what you like and what you’d like to switch out. Instead of the jewelry wearing you, minimal jewelry allows the wearer to remain the focus. “Jewelry is very personal and should be worn in a way the wearer finds authentic to their eye,” says Sophie Buhai, founder of her namesake modern jewelry and accessories brand. “I don’t think there are rules. I love seeing someone with eccentric taste wearing jewelry in an offbeat way. The bigger the piece, the more I like to let it stand alone without distractions. For smaller pieces, it’s easier to layer. But the more statement the jewelry, the simpler the clothing should become — almost like a backdrop,” adds Buhai.

Here are some more things to consider when shopping for minimalist jewelry:

  • Quality and longevity: When in the market for minimal jewelry, quality is of the utmost importance, and it goes hand in hand with longevity. You don’t want a ring that turns your finger blue after one wear. “Like anything, well-made items last longer,” says Buhai. She suggests when buying silver —buy solid. “For silver, I like a heavy weight and always buy solid sterling silver. For silver, it is best to find artisan-made pieces — they feel like little works of art and should be collected in the same vein. A good piece of silver jewelry should last forever and be considered an heirloom piece that transcends trends. It is classic and a signature look for women who like to whisper rather than scream,” says Buhai. After all, Buhai is a big believer in not letting your jewelry wear you. It’s also essential to care for your pieces, whether it is plated or solid gold. Keep it in jewelry pouches and avoid harsh liquids that may aid in tarnishing.

  • Price: There are a lot of misconceptions about price points when it comes to jewelry. You don’t have to buy fine jewelry to own pieces that will last for years. It’s about shopping brands that never sacrifice quality or design to ensure you invest in something that has value. Be sure to read the “about sections” before purchasing from a brand to see what their ethos is. Do they maintain an ethical working environment for their jewelers? Do they use recycled metals or stones? Do they follow sustainable practices when sourcing materials and manufacturing? As you’ll see in our minimal jewelry guide, it’s possible to shop from thoughtful brands that also make high-quality jewelry whether you have a big budget or not.

Minimalist Jewelry Trends for 2022

  • Minimalist earrings: Whether you have pierced ears or not, anyone can enjoy minimal earrings. There are minimalist gold stud earrings and dainty hoop earrings — from very small huggies to oversized shoulder duster hoop earrings for everyday wear. There are single earrings and sets in silver, gold, rose gold, and mixed metals. Have fun with the finishes, and opt for a high-shine, matte, or textured metal look. Most minimal jewelers have at least one ear cuff or ear crawler style that requires no piercing while giving the illusion of one or several piercings. These come in plain metal without stones or with subtle stone detailing.

  • Minimalist necklaces: When it comes to minimalist necklaces, there are endless looks to create. Look for layered chains attached with a clasp to give the illusion of multiple necklaces at varying lengths. Or, opt for layering standalone chains of different sizes to create a unique look over a turtleneck sweater, low-cut v-neckline, or with a bit peeking through your oversized button-down shirt. Have fun mixing metals and playing with textures. A smooth, shiny finish adds a polished feel to every outfit, while a textured finish will give your look an organic twist, perfect for the beach or the boardroom. Alternatively, a minimalist pendant necklace is incredibly chic when worn by itself. These come in metals with and without minimal precious and delicate stone detailing. If you love raw stones, look for an architectural carved stone pendant on a cord to incorporate a pop of color for a minimal statement.

  • Minimalist bracelets: Minimal bracelets come in many different iterations. Some have mixed metals, chain-link designs, micro-sized gold chains meant to wear standalone or layered, and minimalist paracord bracelets. Play with chain designs of varying thicknesses to create a unique look that will dress up every look. Minimal jewelry is so easy because you can put it on and never take it off; its versatility will guide you from one moment to the next, year after year. If you wear a watch, look for minimal bracelets that complement it. Make sure they’re delicate enough, so they don’t hit your watch and scratch it.

  • Minimalist rings: Minimalist rings are a fun way to let your style come through. You can opt for chunky metal versions, carved iterations, sculpted signet styles with family crests, or cut-out shapes. These come in ring sets and can be layered together or worn individually on each finger. When worn on your pinky, a minimal carved ring has a very different look than when worn on your middle finger or thumb. Yes, we are petitioning to make thumb rings cool. When deciding how to style the rings, remember there are no rules. Experiment with textured metals, and matte finishes, stack them up your entire finger or wear one by itself.
