The Best Mid-Century Modern Chairs You Can Buy on the Internet

Here’s a quick furniture history lesson: Mid-century modern design rose to popularity as a result of German migration in the middle (duh) of the 20th century. Basically, it’s an adaptation of the Bauhaus design style that was popular in Germany at the time, characterized by sleek lines, simple structures and new materials (like velvet). It was the style du jour from the 1940s through the 1960s, but about ten years ago it had a total resurgence—possibly to do with a little show known as Mad Men.

Luckily, as a decor aesthetic, it has staying power. So fear not if you’ve outfitted your entire home in tapered legs and navy leather.

We recently got the opportunity to speak with Zoe Garred, director of product development at Articlefor some insight into how to choose the right mid-century piece for your space. She explained, “True mid-century has a great balance between clean simplicity and organic curves, and when you’re shopping for this style of furniture you really want to look for quality materials, like a sturdy frame and solid wood legs, which are telltale signs of an authentic piece.” Noted.

Scroll on for six gorgeous chairs that nail the look and the attention to craftsmanship.
