Girly Goth

What would happen if Black Swan's Nina Sayers got really into Siouxsie and the Banshees? That question was answered at Rodarte, where James Kaliardos for NARS created dramatic eye looks with the help of the brand's Climax Liquid Liner ($24), High Pigment Longwear Eyeliner ($24) in Ocean Drive, and Climax Mascara ($25).

On the "dark bimbo" end of the goth spectrum, Kim Shui sent models marching down the runway in lip combos that would definitely get the Maddy Perez seal of approval. MAC key MUA Romero Jennings used the Lip Pencil in Nightmoth ($21) and the Locked Kiss Ink 24Hour Lip Color—Gossip in the center and Sardonic on the outer parameter ($33 each)—for the bold pout. The whole thing was topped off with clear Lipglass ($21), of course.

When describing his inspiration for the Sandy Liang show, makeup artist Manny Gutierrez perhaps perfectly summed up the Girly Goth trend in general: "This look embodies the grungy, sad, pretty girl energy," he said. "She is a maneater but very feminine.” For this particular show, the focus was on the lips. Working with Ilia Beauty, Gutierrez used the Color Block Lipstick ($28) in True Red for models in all-red 'fits, the Clean Line Liquid Liner ($28) in Midnight Express mixed with the Lip Wrap Reviving Balm ($24) for all-black looks, and "a soft natural lip just using the Lip Wrap Reviving Balm and the Lip Wrap Overnight Treatment ($26)" for the rest of the ensembles.

At Christian Siriano, Sofia Tilbury took inspiration from romantic gardens and one of the most timeless style icons—Audrey Hepburn—to create radiant, skin-forward makeup looks. "I wanted the models’ skin to look fresh, plump, and dewy, so we started with the skin-cushioning, exfoliator-meets-essence Glow Toner ($55), and layered with the super-hydrating Magic Serum Crystal Elixir ($80), which contains polyglutamic acid to instantly quench the skin," said Tilbury, who wrapped up the base prep with the Magic Cream ($64). A bold "pop of confident color" in the form of the brand's K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Velvet Underground ($34) completed the look.

Glazed Blush

At Marrissa Wilson's presentation, Nick Lujan, director of artistry and education at Kevyn Aucoin, created a glazed blush moment with the help of a slightly unexpected tool: lipstick. Lujan used the brand's Unforgettable Lipstick in the shade Fatal ($30) on a contour brush "and really bounced and pressed it into the temple and up toward the crease of the eye." After setting with loose powder, "we used The Neo-Blush in Sunset ($38) to amp up the blush look and give it a little more warmth without it being too red," Lujan said.

While all the models at Prabal Gurung were styled with brushed-up brows and diffused, smokey cat eyes, there were four unique variations on "tribal punk" created by MAC's Sil Bruinsma. And though we love them all, we have to admit: There's something impossibly chic about a nearly-naked face with one bold, gold makeup accessory. This gilded moment was created by drawing a 1/2 moon shape between the eyebrows with the MAC Pigment in Old Gold ($23).

Jason Wu

Jason Wu Beauty's lead makeup artist Diane Kendal used shades of gold to harken back to the silver screen. "This look reflects this season’s outfits by combining sexy touches with a bit of edge," said Kendal. "Eyes are the punctuation of these looks with beautiful smoky eyes that... nods to cinema." She used the deep shades and gold shimmers from the brand's Flora 25 Eyeshadow Palette in Earth Angel ($35) to create the look.

A little bit art deco futurism, a little bit Studio 54, and a whole lot diva, Bronx and Banco went from maximalism. Charlie Hiddle, global head of artistry for Stila Cosmetic, utilized plenty of gold and silver when crafting looks for the show. On the eyes, he used the Stay All Day ArtiStix Graphic Liner in Disco and Charleston ($24 each), along with the Heaven’s Dew All Over Glimmer ($30) in Silverlake and a yet-to-be-released summer 2023 shade.

MAC Cosmetics

Isamaya Ffrench worked with MAC Cosmetics to create makeup looks for one of the most ambitious shows of the season, Thom Browne's Le Petit Prince-inspired outing. The constellations of stars, planets, and other heavenly bodies were illustrated with plenty of Glitter ($23) and Pigment ($25).

Total Smoke Shows

LaQuan Smith looked to the past—specifically the 1980s soap opera Dynasty—for his take on the modern woman. "We wanted to do something very graphic with a smokey eye," lead makeup artist Raisa Flowers told Byrdie. "The LaQuan Smith woman is super sexy, super feminine, and super powerful. And I think the [makeup embodies] that super bold, funky, glamorous look." On the eyes, she used Huda Beauty's Naughty Nude Eyeshadow Palette ($67), Empowered Eyeshadow Palette ($67), Life Liner Quick ‘n Easy Precision Liquid Eye Liner ($19), and the soon-to-be-released Creamy Kohl Longwear Eye Pencil ($19).

At Altuzarra, Diane Kendal's smokey eyes looks were paired with bouncy, hydrated skin prepped by estheticians Oni Chaves and Ian Michael Crumm. The duo used Ourself's HA+ Replenishing Serum ($145) to plump up the skin, Daily Renewal Cream ($175) to boost radiance, and Lip Conditioner ($45) to hydrate and add a touch of shine.

So Fresh and So Clean

The line between skincare and makeup was blurred at Ulla Johnson, where lead MUA Romy Soleimani, working with Sisley-Paris, toggled between the two to create looks that took "your skin but better" to a whole new level. That included using a touch of the Eye Contour Mask ($170) over the Ombre Éclat Liquide in Champagne ($60) for dewy lids and topping off the Phyto Teint Ultra Eclat Foundation ($105) with the Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream ($230) for even more natural radiance.

The look at Markarian was fresh-faced—literally, as Bobbi Brown global pro artist Cassandra Garcia eschewed foundation in favor of the brand's Vitamin Enriched Face Base ($66), Vitamin Enriched Eye Base ($58), and Skin Full Cover Concealer ($33). The models also went blush-, bronzer-, and highlighter-free, with just subtle pops of color on the eyes and lips.
