The holiday season might be all wrapped up, but already, there’s another celebration to be had: the Lunar New Year. Commemorating the first new moon of the lunar calendar, this special occasion results in plenty of festivities in East and Southeast Asian cultures—featuring firecrackers, confetti, and more. Much like the annual new year that starts on January 1, it’s a time to celebrate new beginnings with friends and family, often with food and, of course, gifts.
This year’s Lunar New Year—which falls on February 10—marks the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac, which represents good fortune, strength, and health.
