• St. Barts couldn't be allowed to fade away after Hurricane Irma in 2017—there was too much at stake, too many collective memories stacked up like oyster shells on this perfect trifecta of sand, superyacht chic, and insouciance. The comeback has already unshuttered fresh incarnations of Hotel Christopher, Manapany, and Le Sereno. Family-size Le Guanahani comes next, in October 2020, with ramped-up menus and a pool, while the effortlessly discreet Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France (above right), which reopened last December, follows up this month with new rooms, a five-bedroom exclusive-use villa, and a restaurant from Jean Imbert, whose other addresses include Miami's Swan.
• But all eyes are also on the return of the island's original five-star Eden Rock (above left and right) this November, reimagined by London-based design maximalist Martin Brudnizki. Additions include Villa Nina, kitted out in pale pink and green with a veranda; while in the bar a frosé trolley will serve guests in Pippa Holt caftans and Tabitha Simmons espadrilles. The most welcome arrival is a spa, which the hotel always lacked, with yacht-inspired design and treatment cabins. It's not just about the hotels: February will see the first Caribbean yoga festival on the island, and recent foodie arrivals include Fish Corner in Gustavia, whose two owners haul everything in on a boat. Despite its glamorous reputation, the island is surprisingly wild—go exploring with a tough Land Rover equipped with a handy shower with St. Barts Defenders. —Rick Jordan
• Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Caribbean, the largest of the Lesser Antilles group doesn't flaunt the same beachy appeal as some of its neighbors: Dominica is an island defined by bare-knuckled blue mountains, hot springs, and a tangle of rain forests, along with a river for every day of the year. And yet lodging options have been limited for those wanting more than a beach flop. But with the October opening of the Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski, this lush paradise has upped its appeal. The hotel faces a shimmering stretch of the Caribbean, but head round the back and rooms have safari-style views of the tightly forested Cabrits National Park. A good place to hole up in after dancing at the island's annual World Creole Music Festival. —Betsy Blumenthal
