A Waldorf Astoria property, the historic Arizona Biltmore is a true work of art inside and out, and one of the city’s greatest landmarks. The design hotel was inspired by the architectural style of Frank Lloyd Wright (who had his own input on the place). The nearly century-old property has all the amenities you need, including seven outdoor swimming pools, three restaurants, a pair of golf courses, and a full-service spa. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the historic hotel, dubbed the “Jewel of the Desert.” Striking the perfect balance between old-school elegance and modern luxury, its design (by Wright draftsman Albert Chase McArthur) is believed to feature a geometric pattern representing a freshly cut palm tree. Whether you see that or not, the property’s famed “block design” is unmissable as a desert Art Deco masterwork.

If the walls could talk at Chateau Marmont, this iconic hideaway perched (in full view) above Hollywood’s Sunset Strip would have no shortage of tales to tell. Since 1927, the historic retreat—inspired by a castle in Amboise, France—has played host to celebs, rock stars, and entertainment icons of all stripes and fates, sordid or otherwise. The hotel offers individually designed rooms, suites, and cottages, along with a popular restaurant, garden café, and bar that’s still known for some of the best recognizable people watching in Hollywood. If small, European-sized digs don’t charm you, avoid the standard guest rooms and opt for one of the roomier suites with balconies and views of those Hollywood Hills hulking behind the property. Either way, staying here is some serious La La Land-style time travel.

How We Chose the Best Hotels

In selecting the best hotels we considered a multitude of factors, taking into account the location, services, amenities, cost, reputation, and overall atmosphere of any given property. As a travel writer, I've traveled the country, personally stayed at many of the exceptional places featured here, and can attest to the experience first-hand as a guest. In addition, fellow travel writers and industry insiders were consulted to gain added insight and broader recommendations beyond a single traveler's scope—which has its limitations, regardless of how many standout spots an individual has checked into. Ultimately, in curating this list, we researched extensively and pored over multiple reviews to ensure only the top hotels appear here.

Why You Should Trust Me

As a seasoned travel journalist, I've crisscrossed the country and the world reviewing a wide assortment of hotels for a variety of publications and audiences. I’ve learned both broadly and specifically what separates a good experience from a great one.
