How To Make Homemade Steak RubDavid Malosh

When it comes to cooking steaks, Ladd and I tend to like them simply seasoned with salt and pepper or a little lemon pepper. I'll still always love a simple steak, but I recently made this steak rub that takes an everyday steak to the next level! There's a little bit of brown sugar for sweetness that balances perfectly with the smoked paprika, ground cumin, and garlic and onion flavors. This rub is delicious on all your steak dinner recipes, but it would be equally good on chicken recipes, too.

What is the best seasoning for steak?

You can really season steak to the degree of your liking. Some people like it heavily seasoned, while others like it with just a sprinkle of salt and pepper so they can really taste the meat. The best part about using a steak rub is that you can adjust the amount you use to your own tastes. Sprinkle with a heavy hand—or not, and enjoy your steak just how you like it!

How long should spice rub sit on steak?
I recommend pulling the steak out of the fridge about 30 minutes before you want to cook it. Season it with your spice rub, then let it sit for 30 minutes at room temperature while you heat up the grill. This will let the spice rub permeate the meat a bit and your steak will cook more evenly since it isn't coming right from the fridge.

Should you oil steak before using spice rub?

No, you don't need to oil the steak before putting on the spice rub. It's better to put the spice rub directly on the meat so it can impart the most flavor.
