Over the past few years, not only has the percentage of females on golf courses risen — from 19 percent a decade ago to 25 percent in 2021, according to the National Golf Foundation — but the number of golf apparel lines has increased as well. And for brands that already had golf (or tennis) apparel, the lines have expanded to bring in more styles and options to keep up with growing interest in the sport. One main staple? The golf skirt!

With countless brands offering different cuts, lengths, and styles of skirts or skorts for women to don on the links, it can be tough to know which are worthy. To take the guesswork out of the equation, we tried the latest and greatest from athletic brands to present the best golf skirts to keep you comfortable, covered, and cool on the course.

Tips for Buying a Golf Skirt

Consider the best cut for you

Before buying a golf skirt, because there are so many great options, it’s important to think about what you’re looking for specifically. For starters, do you like a pleated, A-line, or more pencil-like look? Pleats can give a more full look, while a clean A-line silhouette can look a bit more form-fitting, so it’s important to know which cut is best for you.

Don’t forget about extra features

Then it’s time to think about the features. While most golf skirts have built-in liners, you should think about what length you want the liner and hem to be. Some liners feature hidden pockets and others don’t, so be sure to choose an option with them if that’s important to you. If you like more pockets —on the top layer or in the back — consider that, too. Decide whether you want a thick or thin waistband, elastic or one with a drawstring, and whether or not belt loopholes are a feature you'll use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are golf skirts and tennis skirts the same?

Many performance skirts have similar features — like built in liners — but that doesn’t mean they’re all the same. Tennis skirts tend to be shorter and allow for more freedom of movement to accommodate the sport's dynamic, quick moves. Golf skirts will often be on the more form-fitting side and may not have pockets big enough to store tennis balls. However, there is a ton of variation even within each category — they can have different cuts like an A-line or pleats, different hem and inseam lengths, pockets or no pockets, and thick or thin waistbands.

What’s a good length for a golf skirt?

The length of a golf skirt is a personal choice. Think about what length will allow you to feel comfortable when you’re swinging on the tee box or bending down to get the ball out of the hole. Whether you prefer a shorter or longer length, be sure you check out the hem and liner length before you purchase.

What materials are good for golf skirts?

While golf might not be the most strenuous of sports, you’ll still likely work up a sweat playing even just nine holes — especially if it’s a hot summer day. Look for a skirt made out of stretchy materials that won’t restrict any movement, as well as breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics so you feel comfortable and won’t feel weighed down at any point. If sun protection is important to you, consider a skirt with UPF material, too.
