Last year’s Golden Globes saw attendees wear black in honor of the #TimesUp movement, protesting sexual harassment and gender inequality in Hollywood. But this year’s red carpet is making a return to anything-goes fashion. And with precious few days left until the awards show takes place, the moment to make a wish list of what this year’s nominees should wear—as well as look at some of their past fashion wins—is now. (Read here for gowns and pant looks you may just see on the step and repeat this time around.)

Past awards ceremonies conjure up an overwhelming number of fashion moments that continue to stand the test of time, even several decades later. (Fun fact: the first Globes were hosted in 1944.) Throwing it way back, its early years focused on Old Hollywood glamour: in 1957, Elizabeth Taylor went all the way with an embroidered gown, tiara, and door-knocker earrings; later in 1962, Marilyn Monroe accepted here Henrietta Award in a black sequined style.

Then, in the 1970s and 1980s, a more-is-more mentality overtook the carpet: Sonny and Cher showed up in 1973 looking fresh out of Studio 54, Cher clay in a heavy fur and groovy midriff-baring ensemble. In 1987, singer Melba Moore attended in a puff-shouldered red gown that could easily appear on a Valentino runway today.

Later on in the 1990s, gowns were pared back and given more severe, straight-down silhouettes. (Minimalism and clean lines were all the rage.) For instance: In ’99, Angelina Jolie wore a simple tank dress covered in silver sequins. (A woman ahead of her time, she even wore a square-toed sandals with it.) In the early 2000s, starlets began favoring flowy, romantic fits and dainty shoulder straps. Take Halle Berry in 2003, who slipped on one of her best red carpet looks to date, a pastel blue number with form-hugging ruching in all the right places.

By the late 2000s, fashion got a little more, well, 2000s-ish; Beyoncé wore a glittery gold dress by Elie Saab in 2007, a fitting choice given she was nominated for her turn in Dreamgirls. That same year, Reese Witherspoon brought back short hemlines in that infamous yellow Nina Ricci number. Which leaves us with the recent years: a fan favorite will always be Lupita Nyong’o in 2014, when she wore a red Ralph Lauren cape dress. Or, in 2016, Brie Larson opted for a gold halter gown by Calvin Klein—a look that shined quite literally, just like the Globes statue itself.
