These are the 3 best electric toothbrushes, according to dentists

You may not floss twice a day (don’t worry, we won’t tell), but you (hopefully) brush your teeth at least two times daily. And when it comes to toothbrushes, electric models can be more effective at reducing plaque and providing a deeper clean than their manual counterparts, according to the professionals.

“Gum health begins at home and electric toothbrushes give patients a jumpstart on their oral health,” Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. Joseph Goodman tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“An electric toothbrush removes more plaque than a manual brush due to the mechanical motion,” he explains. “Second, most electric toothbrushes provide a timer that assures you brush for the proper time of two minutes.

In short, an electric toothbrush can make it easier to maintain a healthy smile. And if you’ve heard the saying "you only need to brush and floss the teeth you want to keep” then it’s time to invest in an electric toothbrush so you can keep all those pearly whites.

“Electric toothbrushes are five times more effective than a manual toothbrush,” says Twice toothpaste’s dental expert Dr. Jonathan Levine DMD, PC. “I love Oral B 5500 because its bristles are soft and round-ended, which allows you to clean hard-to-reach areas. It also helps create better habits like brushing for two minutes because it beeps and lights up for each quadrant of the mouth”

”Sonicare is a unique toothbrush that uses sonic movements that cause toothpaste to break up into microbubbles, helping to clean the gumline in gentle effective ways while having brush strokes in the 30,000 strokes-per-minute range,” explains Dr. Lawrence Fung, DDS.”For patients with lots of gingival recession, I usually recommend a Sonicare as it is a bit more gentle at cleaning.”

“The Sonicare toothbrush is a great electric toothbrush that has different modes and intensities, a timer, a sensor if using too much pressure and a UV sanitizer to kill bacteria on the brush,” adds Dr. Marc Lowenberg, Cosmetic Dentist of Lowenberg, Lituchy & Kantor in NYC. “Holding the brush in one position and slowly moving it to different sections of the mouth is the most efficient way of utilizing the toothbrush. And the bristles on the Sonicare are soft enough not to harm the enamel.”

“Electric toothbrushes have been studied extensively in the dental literature, and the consensus is that the Sonicare toothbrush is best for removing plaque and healthy gums,” notes Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. Matt Nejad.
