These Are the Best Cities in America to Vacation with Your Pet in 2022, According to a New Survey

Everyone needs a vacation from time to time—it's an ideal way to unwind and de-stress from everyday life. However, if you're a pet owner, you know how hard it can be to say goodbye to your furry friend for days, or even weeks, at a time. But who says you have to? The days of worrying about your four-legged pals while you're away are over, thanks to All About Cats' new list of the best destinations in the United States to vacation with your pets.

To give each city its pet-friendly score, the research team took into account five different factors: number of pet-friendly hotels, dog-friendly restaurants, cat cafes, percentage of pet owners in the state, and number of veterinary services. With these factors in mind, each city was given an overall score, with the highest score being a 10.

So, where is the best place to bring your pet along on vacation with you? According to the data, Portland, Ore. takes the cake as the most ideal city to relax with your furry pal, with an overall score of 7.68 out of 10. Not only does 60 percent of the population own pets, but it ranked in the top 10 for the most dog-friendly restaurants, ranked third for most dog-friendly hotels, and was just shy of 300 veterinary services.

Ranking second after Portland, is Austin, Texas, which received a total score of 7.59. The city ranks high mainly for its six cat cafes, but it also ranks in the top five for cities with the most dog-friendly restaurants—having 34 in total. Plus, Austin has 247 veterinary service locations so your pet will stay in tip-top shape for the entirety of your trip.

Rounding out the top three best cities to vacation with your pet is Seattle, Wash. The city has two cat cafes—which ties it for third in that category—and the location ranks in the top 10 for dog-friendly restaurants, with 29 in total. When all of these factors are weighed together, the city earns an overall score of 7.36 out of 10.
