The end of the year is a always a time of reflection, and naturally, we found ourselves thinking about the year's best celebrity beauty moments. In 2023, celebs brought their A-game to red carpets, awards shows, and premieres, giving us plenty to remember. There were hair changes galore, show-show-stopping manicures, and, of course, all the food-inspire makeup looks we could ask for. Case in point: Beyoncé went blonde, Hailey Bieber skyrocketed strawberry makeup to viral fame, and Julia Fox cooked up more adventurous makeup moments than we can count.

Luckily, we rounded up all the inspo in one place. Ahead, in no particular order, the 22 best celebrity hair and makeup moments of 2023.

Selena Gomez

Hair transformations will never fail to wow us, especially when the new look is so different from what we're used to. Needless to say, Selena Gomez’s switch from her classic jet-black hair to bright golden highlights took our breath away. Done by her long-time hair colorist, Nikki Lee, only weeks before the end of the year, the look was immediately ingrained in our brains as one of the biggest beauty changes of the year.

Beyoncé

The same day Gomez was going brighter, Beyoncé was going gray… or silver, rather. To celebrate the premiere of her film Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, Queen B took her album's chromatic color scheme to the next level—ditching her chantilly blonde highlights in favor of the iciest silver blond hue. Immediately upon posting,the BeyHive made the hair change go viral, claiming it topped nearly every beauty look from her record-breaking era. We just have to agree.

The Met Gala is always the epitome of glamour. So, it was no question that when top model Quannah Chasinghorse waltzed onto the most coveted staircase in fashion, her hair and makeup were top-tier. The model's entire ensemble honored Karl Lagerfeld's signature style while nodding to her indigenous heritage—most notably, by accentuating her signature face tattoos with makeup and including three feathers in her perfectly styled hair.

Jenna Ortega

Another Met Gala attendee that took our breath away? Jenna Ortega. After her breakout role as Wednesday Addams, soft goth style became emblematic of the star's red carpet appearances. So naturally, she channeled the look at one of the biggest nights in fashion with an over-the-top outfit, indie sleaze eye makeup, and her signature wispy bangs.

Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel joined Chasinghorse and Ortega as one of our favorite beauty moments at the Met Gala. Quite literally dripping in gold with her Schiaparelli couture, the actor's makeup only added to the glamour. She pulled her hair into straight-back cornrows and opted for sparkly red eyeshadow and thick black eyeliner. It's simple, but extremely effective.

FKA Twigs

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CyBnAI8gNuM/?igshid=ZWI2YzEzYmMxYg%3D%3D" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@Raoulalejandre</a>/instagram</p>

One of the biggest alternative pop stars in the world also happens to be one of the biggest beauty risktakers. FKA Twigs regularly serves avant-garde, ethereal looks both in her everyday life and on the red carpet. However, one makeup look, done by Raoul Alejandre, glittered across the internet like no other. The frosty look saw Twigs’ eyelids covered in glittering lilac shadow, with a just as shimmery purple shade lining her under eye and cut crease. The frosted hues continued onto her lips with an ombré pink moment with the glitteriest section at the center.

Julia Fox

While Twigs is the queen of edgy, ethereal beauty, Julia Fox has taken the throne for abstract, grunge glamour that plays by no rules but her own. No look exudes that philosophy more than the Black Swan makeup she wore to the White House Correspondents' Dinner this year. Her bright white painted face gave a stark backdrop for her exaggerated cat eye to lay. Traveling to her hairline with a sharp point, the liner was all we could stare at—which was feat, considering her entire outfit looked to be made of fur, and her lips were covered with a glossy purple hue.

Rihanna

2023 was all about the hair change. Hot on the heels of Gomez and Beyoncé going brighter, so did Rihanna. When attending the F1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas, the superstar paired her biker-themed look with brand new honey blonde hair styled in the chicest forehead-covering side swoop. Like everything the singer does, the Internet couldn’t get enough, and it might just be one of the most talked about hairstyles of the year despite happening a few short weeks from 2024.

Megan Fox

Despite all the celebrity hair changes, none were as drastic as Megan Fox's. We will always associate Fox with long, dark hair, and the Capricorn Rising in her kept that her signature until September, when she debuted a blunt "Red Velvet" bob. Done by Dimitris Giannetos, he told Byrdie it's "the shortest length she [has] ever had."

Hailey Bieber

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/haileybieber/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@haileybieber</a>/instagram</p>

It wouldn't be a "Best Beauty" roundup without one of Hailey Bieber's many ultra-viral food-inspired makeup looks. However, out of all her glazed donut, latte, and sugar plum looks, one got recreated more than any of the rest—strawberry makeup. In fact, it was so popular that it became one of the summer's biggest beauty trends, amassing hundreds of thousands of likes across thousands of videos, with her tutorial being the most viewed version. What's central to the look? The heaviest application of blush, faux freckles, and the strawberry-flavored Rhode Peptide Lip Tint, of course.

Pamela Anderson

Who could forget about the biggest (no) makeup moment of the year? 2023 saw the Pamela Anderson renaissance continue, and this time she had a mission—to tell her story unapologetically. Nothing exemplified this more than when she attended Paris Fashion Week without a stitch of makeup. She said on Instagram that her looks were "an adventure in Paris with fresh eyes," which helped her see "there is beauty in self-acceptance, imperfection, and love." We couldn't agree more.

Symone

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/the_symone/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@the_symone</a>/instagram</p>

@the_symone/instagram

There is no beauty in the world without Drag Queens, and Symone has proved herself to be one of RuPaul’s Drag Race's premier look queens. The season 13 winner and fashion mainstay didn’t take her foot off the pedal during Fashion Month, delivering the most mesmerizing looks that only she could pull off. However, our favorite was certainly the oversized, square-shaped hair she wore to the Jacquemus fashion show in Versailles. The look made her multiple feet taller, was structured to perfection, and was one of the highlights of the entire show.

Ice Spice

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/icespice/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@icespice</a>/instagram</p>

Ice Spice wasn't only one of the biggest breakout artists of the year, she had one of 2023's biggest songs with “Barbie World.” For the already iconic music video, the rap princess swapped her ultra-recognizable copper curls for a hot pink malt shop bob—the perfect way to honor the year of Barbie yet keep her vibrant individuality intact.

Taylor Swift

There is no way we could celebrate 2023’s biggest beauty moments without a mention of Taylor Swift. One of her biggest moments of the year, though, came after the first leg of her tour ended, and she walked the red carpet for her filmTaylor Swift: The Eras Tour. Here, she debuted an ultra-wavy faux bob, tucking her long hair up to look like a short cut. Of course, she paired the look with her signature red lips and some dreamy blue eye makeup,

Margot Robbie

Barbiecore obviously didn't start and end with Ice Spice's bright pink bob. Central to the Barbie-fication of the world was Margot Robbie, who spent the press tour for Barbie channeling various iconic dolls from decades past. Our favorite is her take on the 1960s "Enchanted Evening Barbie" that saw her in full princess regalia and a polished '90s updo. Stylishly messy, it had volume at the crown of her head with loose strands and two face-framing silvers of hair shaping her face.

Doja Cat

<p>Getty Images</p>

One of fashion's biggest provocateurs, Doja Cat, has spent the year experimenting with everything from false lashes as facial hair and e-girl style to demon-chic glam. However, nothing, and we mean nothing, will ever beat Doja's Inferno—the Schiaparelli Haute Couture makeup look that covered her body in head-to-toe red Swarovski crystals. Done by the legendary Pat McGrath and her team, Doja's body was studded in 30,000 hand-placed gemstones, transforming her into a walking ruby, and we're still thinking about it months later.

Keke Palmer

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/keke/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@keke</a>/instagram</p>

@keke/instagram

Amongst all the Barbie pink, it was also the year of the grunge and goth revival. Everyone was dusting "rockstar girlfriend" makeup on their eyes and painting their nails cherry cola red. However, Keke Palmer took things to the next level, throwing it back to the 2010 mall goth days with electric blue highlights in her jet-black hair. For even more of a Hot Topic feel, she styled her bangs to the side, added an edgy black eyeshadow look, and wore an all-black outfit.

JT

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/thegirljt/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@thegirljt</a>/instagram</p>

@thegirljt/instagram

Another kind of grunge style to make a comeback this year was the cyber-goth aesthetic—fusing futuristic style with the edginess of punk. Nothing exemplifies this more than the City Girls’ JT in the Beats by Dre x Mowalola ad campaign. The rapper's hair was cut into an abstract bob styled to look like different colored wires, with an extended widow's peak and shoulder-grazing length. As for color, it was a collage of green, blue, red, and gray, perfectly matching the designer headphones.

Lily Rose-Depp

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cv0S_PUS0Ss/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@kirinrider</a>/instagram</p>

Love it or hate it, you couldn't escape it. The Idol truly was one of the biggest shows of the year, making us all fall more in love with Lily Rose-Depp than ever before. Depp wore a plethora of copy-worthy looks in the show—all variations of her signature cat eye and nude lips—but our favorite is this gorgeous frosty blue shadow worn in the show's penultimate showcase episode.

Troye Sivan

Though Troye Sivan was also in The Idol, his biggest beauty moment had nothing to do with the show. Instead, it was when he transformed into his drag persona for his music video for “One Of Your Girls,” and had the whole internet talking. Wearing all YSL Beautè, his skin was glowy and flushed with glossy pink lips and fluttering eyelashes. Square-shaped French tips and a messy-chic blonde hairstyle completed her look.

Dua Lipa

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/dualipa/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@dualipa</a>/instagram</p>

@dualipa/instagram

In the year of the hair change, Dua Lipa perhaps had the biggest transformation of them all. In order to announce her new era, the pop star ditched her signature look for new cherry cola hair. The shade was not only perfectly on trend, it was a great way to mark her new sound.

Jennie

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/jennierubyjane/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">@jennierubyjane</a>/instagram</p>

@jennierubyjane/instagram

Blackpink's Jennie brought us one of the more surprising uses of rhinestones we’ve seen yet—glittering nose strips. Where most would think to add the little gemstones to their eye makeup, Jennie studded the bridge of her nose, achieving the most artistic bandage we've ever seen. She paired the gemstones with pink lips, hair bows, and a black tutu for a mesmerizing e-girl meets coquette aesthetic.
