The Best Body Shavers for Men

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

While sprouting body hair isn’t a choice, managing it (or not) with a quality body shaver is entirely up to you. Admittedly, we kind of envy the guy who can sprout thick, dark hair from just about every pore on his body, and prance around proudly at the beach without a care in the world. But that’s not most people. If you prefer some middle ground of “manscaping” (or even a fully smooth look), then you probably need a body shaver in your arsenal.

The key difference between body shavers and face shavers tends to be the ergonomics of it all, as well as other design features that suit different body parts. If you’re going to shave your own back, then you need a device that works despite the odd angles. And if you’re going to shave your pubic hair (more on that below), then you need something that honors the sensitivity of the area. Luckily, the best body shaver options will cover all these needs. Some of them will work equally well on facial hair and body hair alike.

Our overall top pick in our 2023 Grooming Awards: Philips Norelco’s Bodygroom 7000, which combines trimming and shaving into one unbeatable tool for all your manscaping needs.

How to Shop for Body Shavers

The best way to frame your search is to decide how often you want or need to shave—and what “shaved” means for you. Some people really just want a body trimmer that gives them the appearance of being bare-skinned. Others want to have baby-smooth skin that, aside from waxing and depilatory creams, is achieved though manual razor shaving. Lastly, there’s a whole group of people who are satisfied by electric shavers, since they can get the hair short enough to appear bare (even better than trimmers), without having to risk things like ingrown hairs, razor burn, and shave cuts.

It’s also important to consider the sensitivity of the body part(s) you’re grooming. The groin requires a lot more protection and sensitivity than, say, the back. And if you're shaving, then there’s a chance you plan to show off that fresh skin within a day or so of the act (unless it’s just an ongoing personal preference). So, you want to find a product that doesn’t inflict any pain or irritation on the skin. Again, this is why many people opt for electric devices in place of razors, which also explains our top pick in this category.

How We Tested

At Men's Journal, we’re constantly testing the latest products, some of our team with more than a decade of grooming coverage under their belt. Whenever something enters the marketplace, it’s also at our desks, and quickly being tested. Think of us as grooming lab rats; we get to enjoy the spoils when something is really great, and endure the agony when a product isn’t up to par.

The Best Body Trimmer: Panasonic Body Groomer

Some guys can do all the “shaving” they want without a shaver at all: Body trimmers can get hair down to a barely-there length, achieving the same aesthetic without having to risk irritation or added chafing. Panasonic’s device is notable here for its vertical mouth, which allows you to better position the trimmer into crevices like pits and upper hamstrings, and with guard options that allow for customized trimming lengths, too.

It’s easy to pack, too, since it folds in half, and most men will even be able to use it on dry skin. Just rinse off first and take things slowly if you do.
