The Best Beauty Moments From the Gucci Runway at Milan Fashion Week

This afternoon inside the Gucci Hub, designer Alessandro Michele presented Gucci’s Spring collection with a singular mission: “Allow people to walk through fields of possibilities, cultivate beauty, make diversity sacrosanct, and celebrate the self in expression and identity,” as the show notes stated. From geometric braids to false eyelash brows, the hair and makeup captured this radically individual spirit and offered no shortage of subversive shock value. Here, the standout beauty takeaways from Gucci’s Spring 2020 show.

Clear Lip Gloss Is a Universal Staple

Fluidity being an essential code of the Italian fashion house under Michele, models of all genders received a generous slick of Gucci’s Baume à Lèvres Lip Balm in shade 1. Reflecting off of the runway’s white-hot lights, the translucent gloss imparted a cool, clean effect against the bare, natural complexions.

Eyebrows Are the New Eyelashes

False lashes have always been synonymous with glamour in the most traditional sense. How best to buck the norm the Gucci way? Stack them on the brows too, says makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver. Contrasting the raw skin, eyes and eyebrows were accentuated with rows upon rows of lashes to graphic—and double-take-inducing—effect.

Fringe Skews Bold and Blunt

Directional cuts reimagined in new, inventive ways are par for the course whenever Michele joins forces with hairstylist Paul Hanlon. This season there was a distinct emphasis on fringe—the bolder, the blunter, the better—sheared in micro lengths with a slightly mussed texture.

Geometric Braids Mesmerize

Demonstrating his dizzying braiding skills, Hanlon wove an array of close-cropped, geometric plaited styles, which framed faces powerfully as they sped down the runway. In one instance, an intricate braid pattern mirrored the shape of the oversize, polygon sunglasses the model was wearing.

Bobby Pins Are a Utilitarian Statement

In a display of real-world ease and simplicity, many styles—from a sideswept pixie to tousled curls—were accented with metal bobby pins. A refreshingly unassuming accessory, there isn’t an easier runway-to-street way to punctuate a hair look—or simply pull back a freshly snipped fringe.
