When it comes to the best 2023 hair trends, professionals say this year, less is more. "I think people want easy and practical in 2023," celebrity hair stylist and co-founder of Flawless by Gabrielle Union Larry Sims tells BAZAAR.com. From deep side parts that add depth to a sleek bun or ponytail in minutes, to intricate braided updos, and the use of soothing scalp oils and massagers on wash day, we predict that hair looks and maintenance over the next 11 months will be equal parts practical and majorly impactful.

For a closer look at the styles, cuts, and more on that beauty enthusiasts are gravitating toward this year, we've pulled together six of the top 2023 hair trends worth keeping close tabs on. Ahead, learn more about the top expert-approved styles and cuts that are already rising in the ranks on the runways, TikTok, and awards season red carpets.

Even More Retro Hair Inspiration

If you thought last year's '90s and 2000s-era styling marked the end of retro-inspired looks, think again. According to professionals, we're gearing up to see even more throwback hair glam that's not only channels the early aughts, but also references decades like the '60s, '70s, and '80s as well. "Art and history always repeat themselves," Sims adds, which may account for the plethora of shaggy bobs and curtain bangs BAZAAR editors have seen on red carpets and runways alike, as of late.

Wednesday actress Jenna Ortgea's tousled, '60s-inspired flip was one of our beauty favorites at the 2023 Golden Globes. "We didn’t want it too rigid or set, and I still wanted to work with the haircut we had just done a few weeks ago," celebrity stylist David Stanwell previously said. "I love having the haircut make a statement, sculpting it around her face and playing with shapes that work.”

Scalp Care Is Here to Stay

"It all starts with scalp care, and also what you put in your body," Sims says. "I hope people continue to connect the dots with rest, water, exercise, and scalp care. All components lead to healthy hair." From the best hair oils to scrubs, massagers, and more, it's no surprise that attention to detail when it comes to scalp care will only continue trending in 2023 and beyond. "Our scalps and strands have independent biological makeup and daily stressors, requiring an individualized approach," board-certified dermatologist Chesahna Kindred previously told BAZAAR.com. In addition to a regular routine of shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in, a specialized regimen for your scalp is not only ideal for self-care, but optimal hair growth as well.

The Comeback of the Blunt Bob

Supermodel, beauty boss, and ultimate trendsetter Hailey Bieber's recent TikTok hair cut reveal is one of many strong indications that the bob is back (again). Celebrities like House of the Dragons's Milly Alcock, actress and Charlotte Tilbury spokesperson Lily James, among other stars have also been spotted on red carpets with an above the shoulder cut as of late. And while there will always be a special place in our hearts for the lob, 2023 has already proven that the popularity of a classic chin-length chop isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Deep, Deliberate Side Parts

Great news for millennials and everyone else who's partial to a side part: They're back and deeper than ever in 2023. "We’re seeing more deliberate, deep part sides for slick and blown-out styles," Sims says. While this hair style has gotten some flack for being basic the last few years, Spring/Summer 2023 runway beauty looks seen from fashion brands like Loewe and Miu Miu make it clear that side parting reigns supreme this year.

Next-Level Sculptural Braids

Another beauty look from the Golden Globes our editors have been swooning over? Rihanna's avant-garde, face-framing braids. She also brought the beauty envy in a promo video for her upcoming Superbowl Half Time Show where she debuted an insane hair look created by celebrity stylist Yusef. "In 2023, we’re going to see a dope combination of braids, locs, and textured hair. The marriage of all three elements gives next-level regalia," Sims continues. "The look can be dressed up or down. You’re destined to snatch wigs no matter how you rock this powerful combo. Be bold with your braids in 2023! I love the marriage of a slick base and intricate braid detail."

The Wet Look

Also seen on the runway at spring/summer 2023 shows for Victoria Beckham and Dries Van Noten was slicked back, "wet" styled hair, which we suggest keeping bookmarked for warmer months to come. Think: Fresh out of the shower hair, but better. Not only is this hair trend easy to replicate with a bit of hair oil and shine spray, but it also provides a cool, effortless aesthetic that takes any makeup look—from a smoldering eye to a barely-there base—up a few notches.
