Berry French toast at Stack’s Cafe

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Somewhat surprisingly, the “stacks” portion of the menu at Stack’s Cafe is not dedicated to pancakes.

Rather, it refers to what other breakfast joints call “scrambles” — eggs scrambled together with cheese, potatoes, some veggies and generally some type of breakfast meat.

There are ample varieties of both pancakes and “stacks” at Stack’s (I had a bite of my dining companion’s blueberry pancakes — they were great), but I opted for the berry French toast.

Fresh strawberries and blueberries artfully placed on fluffy toast, dusted with powdered sugar, maple syrup and whipped butter on the side. Not a bad way to start your morning, or even early afternoon, which is when I swung by on Saturday.

Stack’s occupies the space north of El Puesto Cocina y Cantina at California Avenue and Easton Drive that formerly housed Bok Bok Chicken (they served good Korean-style chicken wings), and before that Rubio’s Coastal Grill.

The Stack’s sampler features fried cheese curds, onion rings and popcorn chicken.

They offer a straightforward menu of the usual diner offerings. Lots of burgers and sandwiches, omelets and salads.

The Stack’s sampler is hard to resist: popcorn chicken, onion rings and fried cheese curds, served with a side of ranch dressing.

I generally judge diner service by how long my coffee cup goes without a refill. I never waited long at Stack’s. Service was cheery and prompt, and several staffers wished us a good day as we left.

There’s been a lot of restaurant turnover since the pandemic. I’d like to see Stack’s hang around, both for the food and the friendliness.
