The 'Berries And Cream' TikTok Trend Is All Thanks To This Early 2000s Candy

If your TikTok "For You" pages look anythings like mine, by now you've likely heard an audio clip mentioning a "little lad who loves berries and cream." The sound itself is pegged to a treat early 2000s kids will totally remember, especially if they're fans of Starburst candy.

Back in 2007, Starburst released the first commercial starring the "little lad" as an advertisement for berries and cream Starburst flavors. The candies themselves featured fruity flavors with a hint of cream to make them taste a little bit softer and more lush. Flavors include mixed berry, strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry, and you can still find variety boxes for purchase on some corners of the internet.

But it's the catchy (and somewhat unhinged) commercial which may have been more memorable than the candy itself. The first installment features actor Jack Ferver wearing period clothing and interrupting two friends talking about the berries and cream Starburst. Ferver then begins dancing and cheering "Berries and cream, berries and cream, I'm a little lad who loves berries and cream."

If that chant unlocked a core memory of yours you'd long forgotten about, you're not alone. The original commercial was so popular Starburst eventually followed it up with another ad featuring Ferver giving a tutorial on how to do the "little lad dance."

As for how and why this niche 2007 commercial is now a trending TikTok sound? Podcaster Justin McElroy posted the first TikTok video using the sound, and encouraging people to use it too, according to Know Your Meme. It took time for it to catch on, but now the #BerriesAndCream tag has over 1.3 billion views, a number which doesn't include the dozens of remixes adding "berries and cream" or "little lad" into other popular songs and TikTok sounds.

All in all, TikTok continues to be one of the most chaotic social media platforms on the planet, which is why we love it so. You know what we love more, though? Berries and cream. I guess!
